And this one by Deep Purple.. Soldier of Fortune

A few of the gorgeous songs that calmed my soul in my wild rock n roll days.

That could be on my end, but let me know if others experience the same thing. Thanks.

otis redding vs the black crowes ...........?

Otis has the win in absolute spades !

Otis' version is really good -- and I love his work, but I just prefer the Crowes in this case.

I think we can all agree that the Grateful Dead's version is the worst.

I say that and I'm a pretty big fan of the Grateful Dead. Indeed, my left shoulder has an old 'Steel Your Face' tattoo on it.

That's the typical name given to an unnamed sticker that came in an album -- that had this familiar logo on it:

There are some great bands that just plain aren't good when they're live.

An example that I use to share this would be The Black Crowes. They do all sorts of great stuff in the studio, including the use of some fairly obscure guitar tunings. (You don't have to tune a guitar to standard tuning. There are many alternatives.)

This is all well and good when you're in a studio and can prep things to perfection. This is less viable when you're performing in a live environment with a crowd of fans wanting to hear your music.

Frankly, they absolutely sucked when I saw them live. I hoped the first one was a fluke, so I went and saw them again a few years later. Nope. They still sucked.

I'm usually an eternal optimist, and I can't think of anything good to say about their live performances that I've experienced.

To top it off, entirely unknowingly, a buddy of mine went to see them a while back. When he told me about the concert, he told me how horrible they were. If he'd asked ahead of time, I probably would have warned him -- but suggested he go himself to make up his own mind.

Anyhow...

They've made some great music in the studio. Their version of Hard To Handle is, in my opinion, the best cover ever done. Yes, I prefer it over the original -- and I love Otis Redding!

But, for 'purity', I'll shars the Otis Redding version (the original version:

Also, if you're really bored, look up scordatura tuning and microtonal guitars. An altered state of mind and a microtonal guitar can be a bunch of fun, or sound like a hot mess. I suppose that there are theoretically 'infinite' possible ways to tune a guitar. Most of them wouldn't be any good, but it's possible to tune 'em all the way across the spectrum.
Let me see...... What was that line from "Animal House''? Oh, yeah "Otis, my man"!!:p

The Doors had a 'tribute' to Otis Redding.

@The Duck , I have undeleted your two deleted threads. I had no problem viewing them, David @KGIII must have had an issue peculiar to his environment.

BTW with the first one, you did have 2 of the Eagles song at the bottom, so I removed one.

That one showed in my region as "video unavailable", mate.

I have reproduced it below in case others had a problem.

Cheers

Buggered if I know...

I think it may have been a temporary YouTube thing, or maybe a site thing taking time/not doing the URL unfurling properly.

They showed up properly after a refresh.

I have a CD in my collection Titled "The Ultimate Otis Redding" . 20 of his best stuff, including "Dock of the Bay", "Mr. Pitiful", "Open the Door", and "Chained and Bound". In some of the songs, you can hear his heart breaking!! It is on the Warner Special Products label, #9-27608-2, Published in 1986. According to the Documentation, all selections were recorded in Memphis, Tennessee. One of the featured musicians is "Donald "Duck" Dunn, who also was in the "Blues Brothers" band.

Happy Trails,
Paul

"Donald "Duck" Dunn

He played for all sorts of people and on all sorts of albums.

For some reason, that reminds me of The Band. There's the Last Waltz on YouTube, for folks who are so inclined. The full show was pretty long, but I'll link it -- and likely let it play in the background for a while.

Was that third one "A Little More Love"?

If so, and either way, here it is for others.
