I should probably find a link with the lyrics, just in case... It's more folk than rock, but there's folk in this thread and no distinction made - and no folk-specific thread to post in.
The song is based on some poetry and is a bit deeper than what was mainstream at the time. It's also a fun song to play, leaving room for musical interpretations. As for S&G songs, it has a heavy bass line, that's unusual in itself.
I also have Mungo Jerry on the brain, but I figured this would be more interesting.
Edited to Add: That's "American Folk". There are many types of folk music, depending on the region you're in. So, your region may define it differently and have quite a different set of expectations. Folk can be a bit tricky to define and may contain a variety of sub-genres. So, I'll simply mention that this is American (USian) folk music.

That's also a great S&G song.
Oddly, it has gained in popularity since a band called "Disturbed" covered it. I'm not a huge fan of their music, but it's not a terrible cover.

The date marked my first date with my first serious girlfriend, Wendy, I was 18, she was 16. Unbeknownst to me at the time, it was also the 20th birthday of my late wife Elaine, whom I did not meet for another (nearly) 22 years.
Of course, their playlist included Bohemian Rhapsody and other favourites, but one of my faves that was, is and will always be, was "White Queen" recorded from their performance at The Hammersmith Odeon, 1975.

Couple of Oldies But Goldies here - Zager and Evans 1969 "In The Year 2525" and Five Man Electrical Band 1971 with "Signs".

As for Signs, there was a band that did a cover (Tesla) in 1990. They did a fine job, though it was not with electric instruments (other than the bass, which was a Hofner 'violin bass' most popularly used by Paul McCartney). In a nod to the originals, it was on an album titled 'The Five Man Acoustical Jam'.
The other stringed instruments had sound hole mounted pickups.

It was 24th July 1977, at Her Majesties Theatre in Queen Street Brisbane. This was a small intimate theatre which also doubled or trebled up as a venue for live theatre and films.
When Melanie performed for us, she explained that she had a slight throat problem which prevented her from executing a small vocal feature in the following song, but the concert was thoroughly enjoyable.

and "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain"
