As a guitar player, even a 'professional' guitar player, I agree entirely. Dust in A Baggie is one of his most popular songs but that boy has some skills. Bluegrass is definitely a genre that requires skill.

I've been tasked with playing bluegrass a few times in my life, and have enlisted myself to play a few more times.

It will vary depending on where you play. It's a very regional thing.

I'm not sure how to describe the difference while remaining within the rules, which will be evident in a moment.

If you play bluegrass in the southeastern part of the US, it's all about having a good time.

If you play bluegrass inland, say in Indiana (which I've also done for a short spell), it involves a whole lot of religion.

I once showed up, in Indiana, with long hair and on an extended road trip. It was an 'open mic' event where we played bluegrass from about 18:00 to 23:00 at a pizza place with studios in the back. They had a stand-up bass. Not knowing the lay of the land, I happily jumped on the bass and started playing Money, by Pink Floyd. This was well before they started the open event.

There were people sitting there waiting for their kids to get done with their lessons in the studios.

I was busy busting out Pink Floyd on a standup that was on a makeshift stage. It seemed like a good idea.

Until I noticed the glares...

They were entirely unimpressed. So, I stopped playing Pink Floyd.

I settled in and played bluegrass with them for the night and they were truly impressed and happy to have me, but it started off rocky. Being an 'open' situation helped. I played well enough that I was asked to go play with a band at an event a few days later, so I stuck around long enough to do that. But, yeah.... Let's just say that I was happy to play and to get the experience. I may not have been so keen on the message but it was a very good experience.

I'll share that but the story is so much longer.

I suppose some folks might think bluegrass is easy listening but it surely doesn't fit the 'official' definitions.

In my defense, Pink Floyd sounded awesome on a standup bass (sometimes called a double bass).
