FYI
This is a rant, an effort to calm down. At the moment I'm not looking to try to figure all of this out.

***As I write this possible reasons for these issues are coming to mind.

I have no idea what the problem is now. I getting incredibly frustrated. I need to stop right now because if I don't I will probably make things worse and/or never figure out what the problem is.

Recap.
  • Trying to put Zoom in a virtual machine
  • Trying to install Virtual Box
    • Haven't been able to finish installation, no extension pack, access to USB...
    • Uninstalling and starting over seems like a good idea
      • Have not been able to successfully install or uninstall
      • Reinstalling anyway makes no difference.
    • After reading in another thread last night I found out that maybe pieces were left behind because of how I tried to uninstall VB
      • I Rt clicked on the app in the menu, selected uninstall.
        • No success
      • Found directions on the internet to use the terminal.
        • No success.
      • I couldn't remember if this would work and didn't think it would but tried to restore to an earlier time using TimeShift.
        • Didn't work
  • Decided to take extreme measures by re-installing LM 22.1
    • Wouldn't you know, I have more problems there!
      • I couldn't boot from the thumb drive.
      • After messing around in Bios it finally happened.
      • I couldn't boot into a live desktop
      • Tried an OEM installation
        • got stuck there too
          • No live desktop files could be found
          • Had the option to download from the internet.
          • I'm not comfortable doing that, not experienced enough
      • Decided to download LM 22.1 installation files to make a new bootable thumb drive.
      • After waiting 1 1/2 hours...
        • The USB drive can't be found to make a bootable drive
          • Not by right clicking on iso files
          • Not in the file system
      • I can see the thumb drive in disks... I'm not sure where to go from there.
      • I put the thumb drive in my laptop
        • I don't see it there either, but I do see it in 'Disks'
    • The most logical conclusion is that the USB drive itself is damaged
      • This is entirely possible due to circumstances I won't go into here.
      • This the second USB drive I've had trouble with in the last 2 weeks.

THEN...

I placed an order for groceries. I've had many problems placing orders online with this business. I have 'Customer Service' saved as a contact in my phone. Today was yet one more issue.

More aggravation.

***I paused to contact the person who is doing my shopping to find out if I can add a USB drive to my order. He said that should be no problem.

And then there's my new Linux cyber security friend...

I was talking him today, I told him I DO NOT want him to fix my problem, I just needed to get out my frustration. Well he kept going on about Ubuntu, all the reasons I should switch... AGAIN. And again, I explained to him that I'm not ready to switch to another new OS. I haven't really had much chance to figure things out in LM. I JUST got my tower back. I don't know what I would be getting into with Ubuntu. I have too many other things to do right now to take a chance that I might have problems. I just don't want to switch right now, but I did plan on putting on a VM...

And then there's this. He seems to be hinting that he wants something more than platonic friendship.

WHAT!?!

Um... I just finished 4 months of intense chemotherapy, almost died 3 times. Right before that I ran from my home state after a contentious divorce. My hair is just starting to grow back! I'm trying to get my life back on track. Dating is the very last thing I have time for!!!

Thanks for listening.

And oh... The shopper is bringing a new USB drive.

Instead of pulling your hair out, trying to install zoom in a vm, why don't you just install it direct to Mint

sounds like a very very very rough time.
you got cajones to be attempting virtual machine stuff.
i'm too scared of advanced stuff like that. i watched some tutorials and i think i'd rather be tasked with launching a rocket into outer space. (which is to say, not at all!)

Peace

Hitting the panic button now re zoom is probably a bit late.....You have been using zoom for quite some time, so any info gathering by them has already taken place.

Take a deep breath and get LM22.1 installed.

Then enable the firewall and take a timeshift snapshot....

Install zoom. Either from the repository (software manager in LM22.1) or from the itsfoss.com link above

Somehow all my notifications got disabled. I"m not sure what I did...

Zoom is interfering with other apps.

That is not a result of anything from zoom.....although zoom will almost definitely send notifications to you....you can control what they send, either in notifications in zooms settings, or via the system notifications in Linux itself. I will leave the zoom notifications to you

In menu, type in notifications...

Thats mine....alter yours for whatever you want
You can also alter notifications from places like Thunderbird Mail, and Linux.org etc

I have a gmail account which runs via Thunderbird. I choose to disable notifications from Linux.org, and I have adjusted the Notifications setting in Thunderbird, so they relay the notification when I receive an email from Linux.org. That works for me.

I didn't mean Zoom was causing problems there too. I can see why it seemed I was blaming Zoom!

What I meant was that I wasn't getting notifications from Linux dot org. I was looking around earlier and didn't realize I made some changes. I set them back like they were.

Sorry

if everything's screwing up you could always just back up your data, create a new user account, set things up again, import data - knowing the tricks and avoiding the pitfalls, etc, etc.

but maybe take a step back for a day or two first.

I got Virtual Box installed today. Tomorrow I'll decide on a guest... OS on Virtual Box.

Turns out I didn't actually mess anything up. Using the GUI installer got me as far as I got using the terminal. I got stuck at exactly the place. Bob466 gave me the next step...that had to be done in terminal! :p

Is there... any reason not the use Zoom online? Sorry if that's a stupid question, I'm not very knowledgeable about software, hardware, etc.
@Alexandriteia :-

I use the Zoom webapp all the time.

The Zoom desktop client is now around 700 MB in size. Okay, so for many folks that would seem an acceptable trade-off.....but for us in Puppyland, that's bigger than 'Puppy' Linux itself...

...which is ludicrous.

The desktop client used to run out around 300 MB. Then they got the bright idea to add all the Electron stuff into the mix. This more than doubled it in size.

I run Chrome in Puppy anyway. The browser is essential (Chrome is a personal choice, dating all the way back to the Chrome 'beta' testing stage in Summer 2008). Since Zoom is available AS a webapp - and because of the Electron stuff, the desktop client looks, runs and behaves identical to the webapp - it's a 'no-brainer' for me to USE the webapp. Why wouldn't I?

I also run Google's 'Meet', Jitsi's 'Meet' AND M$ 'Teams' as webapps, too. Zoom's webapp used to be crap; slow, laggy, dreadful audio/video quality. During the last 12-15 months, they've addressed these issues, to the point that unless you were aware you were running the one OR the other you really wouldn't be any the wiser now.

The experience is identical. Which is as it SHOULD be.

@Sherri is a Cat :-

It happens, lass, it happens.....more often than many would care to admit. You wouldn't be the first.....and you sure as hell won't be the last.

For me everything seems that way until I do it.

The scariest parts are the things I don't know. Nothing has ever been as difficult as I thought it would be. They usually turn out to be pretty easy or at least easier than I was afraid it would be.
Taking on many things at once; I've found isn't efficient. (unless in an emergency situation)
I tend to do 'one thing at a time' with certainty. Respectfully.

Tho things can be scary when walking into the unknown, facing the uncertainty with a good attitude and some confidence in yourself and others will work out one way or another.

Just thought I'd let you all know that I got Virtual Box installed correctly and tonight I have a virtual machine on my tower.
I was thinking about installing virtual box so I could run some truly enormous OS on top of Tiny Core...

But seriously - That's great! What guest OS are you using?
