Relative newb struggling with live Mint and Ubuntu. Verified downloads of Mint 22.3 and Ubuntu 26.04 failed with two different known good USB drives (can't open \efi\boot - not found). I tried a DVD using "xfburn" with the same results. I was starting to think there was some hardware issue. I read through some threads here and decided to try "Ventoy" where you put it on a USB and then add whatever distros you want to boot. It apparently is MBR only (for my old 2014 system?) even though I have UEFI and Legacy options on the boot menu (I'm sure I don't understand any of this but thought I'd mention anyway). If I choose the Ventoy USB in the "legacy" boot device list it boots up both Mint and Ubuntu !!! Finally! Mentioning this for any fellow newbies that might come along with a similar issue. I already have a very successful Mint installation but I am researching back-up schemes and since I have Time Shift backups on an external drive I thought it would be useful to have a bootable Mint copy around. Just dim ramblings from a very happy new Mint user.

Legacy mode never worked on any live USB or DVD in the last 3 months. I always tried both options many times so you may be correct that it is not "solved" technically but the main thing is (to me anyway) that it boots with Ventoy.

I'd say that it's solved. You got the results you wanted. You're now able to use Linux in a live environment. Depending on the size of your flash drive, you can also stick more .iso files on there to try even more distros.

So, yeah, you've solved this to your level of satisfaction -- which is a good thing.

In fact, you can edit your first post and mark it as solved. It's the 'prefix' to the right of your title when you're editing your post. If you can't figure it out, staff can mark it solved on your behalf, but it's pretty easy. (I suppose it's a lot easier to miss.)

I don't see that booting in legacy mode for just a Ventoy drive is an issue at all. If you install from the Ventoy drive, then UEFI is certainly available. Booting Ventoy and booting an OS installed from it are different things.
