Arlo Guthrie

I am a HUGE fan.

I'm also a huge fan of his father, Woody Guthrie. Unfortunately, I never got to see his father in concert. I was like 10 years old when he died. I have seen Arlo in concert. I have seen Arlo in concert more than once.

It's a tradition to listen to listen to Alice's Restaurant on American Thanksgiving. It's worth the time investment, in my opinion.

But, that's not his best song (from my view). Nope, that prize goes to The Story of Reuben Clamzo and His Strange Daughter in the Key of A:

If you can watch that video without cracking up, I'm not sure what to think of you!

That said, his father was an amazing man. He wrote "This Land Is Your Land", which is nothing like the sanitized version my American friends learned in school. In fact, it was pretty scathing with regards to the American government and society. On top of that, he released the song to the Public Domain, meaning he relinquished his rights to it. Some folks use it as an example to say that Woody was against copyright. However, he didn't do the same for all of his songs.

But, back on the subject of Arlo...

If you're familiar with the Alice's Restaurant song, there's also a movie by the same name. It even has Pete Seeger in it.

I'm a pretty solid fan of American folk music. Well, selectively... I don't like all of it, of course.

This is the movie:

You can probably find it online.

Okay... Here's a link, but read the caveat below:

NOTE: There's some partial nudity and sexual situations in the movie. If this offends you, do not watch this movie.

Because to that, I've made sure that it's not a direct link to the movie.

As indicated, please at least try to keep the linked music on-topic.

Though, someone did share American country music up above. I was kind of confused by that one.

Thanks for that, @KGIII

Yes, the American country music was added by me.

It very definitely fits the description of "Easy Listening'

It's certainly closer to easy listening than DJ music is going to be. Though, I'm not sure 'easy listening' purists would agree with you. At the end of the day, music can be a bit fuzzy to define and classify. So, I think people should probably put music into the most appropriate music thread, of which we have many.

LOL I call American country music 'goat roping music', even though I've been in a band that exclusively played said goat roping music. Some of it is pretty good. The older stuff is often awesome. Johnny Cash is an example of good goat roping music.

They made a movie about his life but I've never bothered to watch it. It's on my list of movies to watch but I never get to the point where I have both the time and motivation to do so.

My favourites were Merle Haggard and Don Williams [spent most of the one evening doing my looking after the gust artist bit, compared to many i met he was a gent of the first order] , although I am partial to older style Bluegrass

I love me some bluegrass, but I'd be hard pressed to call it fitting for this thread. I guess country is allowed, but bluegrass is pushing it.

A lot of bluegrass is religious, as well. We seem to make an exception for song lyrics, and that's an exception I'm mostly okay with (and within reason). I have some bluegrass stories to share but, well, this isn't the place to share those stories. As a guitar player, I love the complexity. Bluegrass requires some skill. There's a modern bluegrass player who has some fame and is pretty good. Look up 'Billy Strings', if you're so inclined.

I get your drift ! ...I truly understand why !
