@KGIII :-

I have to decline your nomination for a number of reasons though. The main one is that I'd rather be just a subscriber than take on official responsibilities. I don't think I'm well suited to the "controlling" aspects of moderation, if that's not too strong a description associated with the role. I'm not confident that I could devote the time commitments to the role either. So, thanks again, but I'm happy in the bleachers

We have a guy like osprey over at BleepingComputer.....goes by the handle of JohnC_21.

He mainly helps out with Windows issues, since this was always BC's "raison d'être" from its founding in 2003.....but he's also pretty knowledgeable with Linux, too. He's been there getting on for 13 years now, and has nearly 40,000 posts to his credit. He always sticks with a problem - "sees it through" - and has an almost 100% 'clean-up' rate.

The kind of member ANY community worth its salt would be proud to count amongst its number.

During that time frame, he's been asked on numerous occasions if he'd like to join the staff.....and every time, without fail, it's always a polite "Thanks, but no thanks. I just want to stay as I am and carry on helping people". (You can almost hear the unspoken rejoinder; "Please stop nagging me about this, and let me get back to what I'm good at..!")

New BC "Advisors" (members who've been recognised as being especially helpful) keep bringing this up.....and every time we have to explain that they're wasting their breath even suggesting it!

I can absolutely understand where osprey is coming from, AND why he's declined, trust me.

Mike. ;)

Also, we'll wait for Wizard to check in.

I've been watching for expressions of interest, rather than nominating people myself.

If people follow Rob's guidelines, listed above, they can't really go wrong, IMO, and any expression of interest will be considered seriously, in that light, and with gratitude, whatever the outcome of choice.

I had a mini-rant recently, over at another thread https://www.linux.org/threads/subforum-suggestion.58692/post-282950 and prior to that Rob had already stated he did not wish to burden David G @KGIII and me any further than we already were. That being said, there is no immediate urgency to settle these appointments, so all interested, do have a think about it, won't you.

Other than if David and I fall under a bus (won't be the same bus), we can soldier on for a while longer, we simply do not need any more work than we are currently doing ;)

I will put a couple of feelers out there, somewhat anonymously couched, and those they refer to will know whom I mean.

1. A fellow from The Land of The Long White Cloud has been here longer than I have (and I joined in 2014), born in 1966.

2. A fellow who used to own an Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator , and have Earth in his sights

BTW Brian @Brickwizard is too modest, with

...not a lot

...that might be so with XenForo site software, but not with regard to moderating, IIRC he is a Mod over at Parrot, lol.

Happy considering, everybody.

but not with regard to moderating, IIRC he is a Mod over at Parrot,
I haven't done much this year due to various reasons of family and health problems [ neither of which i would discuss on open forums]

I'd also like to see @f33dm3bits considered. He also covers a niche time zone, based on what I've observed. I'd strongly consider him as a candidate.
I would like to nominate @f33dm3bits.

I do not know if this may clash badly with his work commitments.
Thanks for the nominations! I'd be happy to help out, I do have to say I don't really have any experience in moderating, so I will need some guidance of the more senior moderators and I do let things get to my head sometimes but I'm sure working together with other mods it will work out fine. I've helped out with marking spam posts when we got flooded with spam and I haven't seen any topics that went out of hand in the past few months, unless I missed something when I wasn't around.

Your pardon, Brian. I should have thought of that (palm to forehead).

Anyway, you know the offer always stands, should it suit. :)

@Rob , sign the sucker nice bloke up before he changes his mind. :)

I'll look forward to it in the fullness of time.

I have a part manual for new Mods done up, which I can run by Staff for input/editing, and that may assist with certain functions.

Cheers

Chris.

Congratulations, @Brickwizard!

I have one unmentioned benefit. I know (from other conversations) that both of those people sometimes get busy. I also know that their time zones overlap a bit. The odds of that time overlapping might be to our favor, meaning there's always at least one of them around.

Sometimes, a post can languish in the queue for longer than I'd prefer. As a user, I'd be accepting of that and know that none of this is a profit center. (By which, I mean, we're all volunteers.) I have read a grumble now and then, but nothing too extreme.

In an ideal world, stuff would get through the queue fairly quickly. In that same world, spam that made it to the public forum itself would be dealt with quickly. This isn't really an ideal world, but that doesn't mean that we can't work toward that goal.

If I stick with that 'ideal world' stuff, the concept of a 'floater' sounds nice. They'd be someone who, for reasons of their own, have more than enough free time and a flexible schedule. Then, we can just say, "Hey, I'm going to take a few days off. Can you help cover my shift?"

Alas, I don't know anyone who fits that bill. We're all old and go to bed at predictable hours.

As an aside, I have a similar t-shirt. It says, "Punk's not dead. We just go to bed earlier."

very good.
