Hi. I've been running Linux Mint XIA for about a month with no problems. I had a major crash last week - a total black screen meltdown - and was finally able to get the system back up and running after help from the mint forum. Since the crash, there are emerging issues: the computer no longer can open any USB devices, and Bluetooth connectivity is really spotty. It won't recognize my JBL Bluetooth speaker, but it will recognize my iPhone, for example. This was not a problem a week ago, so it is definitely connected to the crash.

I was thinking of doing a full reinstall of the XIA OS, but I wanted to back up my data first - but the computer will not recognize the WD MyPassport drive. I don't store anything on the cloud at all. I have no idea how I can do a full install without downloading the os onto a usb drive.

Can anyone advise? Or am I now the proud owner of a brick? HELP

I was thinking of doing a full reinstall of the XIA OS, but I wanted to back up my data first - but the computer will not recognize the WD MyPassport drive.

If you boot to the live USB (the one you used to install) and then 'try' the OS (not installing at this time), can you open the external WD drive at that point?

There are some versions of WD MyPassport drives that people have issues with on Linux. I've recently learned that it is only some of them, as a couple of people here have versions that work fine. So, hopefully, that won't be an issue here.

describe what you were doing prior to that crash.

Any updates just installed

Any apps just installed.....either from software manager or a website

Do you have Timeshift set up...or a full backup

Any changes made to kernel

etc

etc

I installed the AppImage for Audacity. Opened it to check if it ran (it did). Then removed the old Audacity (which did not remove by the way). Shut down, went about my day, and when I came home the computer would not open at all. Black screen.

I have Timeshift set up - there are 5 files - all Xia after the crash - and one from 3/25 (Una). I also backed up my data on the WD Drive before I installed Xia.

No changes to Kernel that I know of.

I updated to Xia direct from the Linux site, without a USB drive. It was not a re-install, but an upgrade.

The WD Passport has been running perfectly. No problems till I plugged it in today and the computer couldn't recognize it. Or any other USB drive.

Then removed the old Audacity (which did not remove by the way)
You attempted removal via the software manager ?....or different way ?
I have Timeshift set up - there are 5 files - all Xia after the crash ....?after?.......none from when it first installed/upgraded from una ?

do you have access to another pc where you could try plugging in the WD ?
Also, @KGIII's instruction above is very much worth a try...post #2

Any chance there was a power failure in the time after you tried uninstalling audacity and switching back on , later ?

What pc is this on?...if a laptop, is it plugged into power....charging ok ?....any signs of drama from it prior to this ?

Sorry for the 50000 questions....it is more than unusual for xia to crash.....

Try to establish if the WD is still ok first at least then you have a backup to use

Also - if it's of any help - here is the Terminal command history from the XIA update forward. (There was a random Spotify file that blocked the last update install for Xia which I was finally able to remove which permitted the final upgrade install):

Yes, I attempted removal via the Software Manager. After several tries it didn't show up in the list, but the Icon/Shortcut was still on the desktop. I deleted it.

There was a storm here that night - but if the power had gone off I would have had to reset the clocks on my stove etc - so that wasn't the case. It was actually my first thought when I got home.

It's on a Penguin, specifically built for Linux. It's always plugged into power, on a power strip. It doesn't move EVER. No drama from it at all.

I have a MacMini and just opened the WD on it no issues at all.

I can't try an install from the USB because there's no usb - I did it directly from the Linux website. Updated not clean reinstall.

That would mean to me that it is gone....the icon being left behind does happen.....not a biggie

The biggest question in mind is this : ....please correct me if I have this in the wrong order etc...

You started with linux Mint 20.3 (una)

You have upgraded to Linux Mint 22.1 (xia)

No fresh install anywhere in the middle of that leap from 20.3 to 22.1 ?

That's completely correct. I was running Una. In order to upgrade through the Linux site I had to upgrade to each subsequent version until I got to Xia. I did it in one sitting. No fresh install until that sequence from Una to Xia.

All I can say, is WOW

That is quite the accomplishment.

Ha! To be clear: no INSTALL ever. Just the sequence of upgrades. When I got the message that Una wouldn't be supported much longer, you'd better believe I got with the program and updated!

To summarise:
Your only real option at this point in time is to download LM22.1 (xia) .... get a usb stick (8gb) .....use balena etcher to 'attach' that downloaded .sio file to the usb stick....and then boot the pc to that usb stick.

(fyi.....when the pc boots to the usb stick, it is NOT using the SSD/.m2.....it uses the 16gb of RAM to run in.)

Once it is booted, you can plug the WD in and see if it recognised.

If you go ahead to do this, is the vaio laptop usable, and does it run linux or windows ?

I updated to Xia direct from the Linux site, without a USB drive. It was not a re-install, but an upgrade.

You can use your older USB drive for this. You don't need it to be the current version. Any Linux USB that has a live environment would work just fine. Just boot, choose the USB option, press try, let the desktop load, and see if you can access your drive that way.

Just as a matter of interest....did you receive any error messages ?

I think there's a little confusion here, my bad. I can't edit the footnote on my profile - the Vaio and the Origin computer are both long gone. I'm only running on a Penguin computer that is specifically a Linux Machine.

The reason I couldn't do a fresh install to get to XIA was that I couldn't get to the boot sequence on startup, no matter how fast or repeatedly I hit ESC. So I took the path of least resistance and updated through the Linux site. It took over a half hour of hitting ESC to get to it when I tried the crash fix. It's not set for fast start up - but it just plows right in there.

Since I have a Timestamp back to Uma - could I restore that, and see if that solves the problem, since everything was working then? The USB boot is a really tricky thing to access on this system. Then I'd just grit my teeth and do the upgrade sequence again.
