I have two new laptops that have Ubuntu 24.04 installed on them. The OS works for a while then one time when I restart, the OS never boots up. I find it weird that both laptops are acting the same way. One is a Lenovo Ideapad 1iand the other is an HP BZ1W9UA model. Both have 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD. I really like Ubuntu and I want to keep using it. I use mine, basically, as a development platform. Apache2, PHP 8.3, and MySQL are installed.

Welcome, check
1]windows quickstart is disabled
2] secure boot is disabled [Ubuntu should work with it, but it occasionally throws a wobbly]

still no joy, try purging the bios/ system by from on, press and hold power button down for 60 seconds release and re-boot

if you think it may have loaded but no screen, try pressing all at once... CTRL + ALT + T, if you get a terminal it may give a starting point

G'day Luke, Welcome to Linux.org
for both laptop to do the same thing, there has to be a common denominator.

Is there any Power setting you have enabled on both ?
Is there any fluctuation in the power at your house/apartment etc?

Have you installed any app that you have not used before?....Did any of the apps you have installed come from the internet, -as opposed to the software centre (I think that’s what Ubuntu calls their software repository)

Do you get the Grub Menu or an all black screen?
Is Ubuntu the only os installed on both machines?

When and if you are able to get a terminal, does typing "startx" at the prompt bring you to the log in?

IF you still have the original usb thumb drive or DVD that you installed Ubuntu with you can boot to the Live version and see if the partitions still exist.

I've fixed it (spotted it before I read your post)

Just to clarify that situation: one can only run startx after one has already logged in. For example, if the machine boots to a text console, one can log in, and once authentication has been made, one can run startx which should bring up the GUI.

In relation to the commonality of problem shown in both machines as mentioned in post #3 by @Condobloke , one other common flaw could possibly be the installation media if for example, the same media was used to install on both machines. It's wise to verify the install media so that one can discount that particular potential issue.

I'll also add to this. You can do this if you're using a system with x11/Xorg. If you're using Wayland, you'll have to use a different prompt to bring up the desktop from a terminal session.
