Hello all,
I have a dual boot MacBook 2016 Intel processor m5 laptop with 8GB RAM that I have Ubuntu 24.04 installed on. I don't have any problems with it until I close the lid to put away that laptop and then reopen it: I loose the wallpaper (it turns solid blue) and the dock turns dark and all the icons previously displayed there are lost. Tooltip is the only indicator that icons are still there and when I click on the icons that are already darkened I get a dark screen that very mmuch looks like a boot screen with quite a few error messages regarding failure to start the following services:
  • systemd-rfkill.service
  • vboxdrv.service
  • few other vbox services although I have installed Virtual Box but it is closed and I don't have any VMs running.
  • snapd.service
-snapd.failure.service
- system-update-utm.service
-I/O error dev loop13, sector xxxx
and few SQUASHFS errors.
As Ubuntu sees it, I have an Apple Inc MacBook9,1 with Intel Core m5-6Y54x4 processor, Intel GraphicsHD 515(SKLGT2). GNOME version 46, Wayland windowing system and kernel version 6.14.0-37-generic.
When I boot into macOS I don't have this problem. What to do to regain this seemingly normal laptop functionality under Ubuntu?

G'day datatronics, Welcome to Linux.org

In Ubuntu, do you have suspend or hibernate settings enabled ?

Under Power in Settings, the closest to what you asked are settings for Automatic Power Saver which is turned off and Automatic Suspend which is also off. Further, Automatic Suspend offers option On Battery Power which is off with Delay being 1 Hour and Plugged In which is also off and Delay is 1 hour. There is no Hibernate settings. So, hoping there's some kind of solution hiding there, I enabled Automatic Suspend and within it enabled both On Battery Power and Plugged In. Closed the lid and opened it again, wallpaper survived this time but the moment I select any icon from the dock the dock turns dark, icons are gone and any app I try to open is reported to be not in the PATH or cannot be found. Cursor turns into a square and when I open the top right set of menus for network connection, power level and turn off/logout- those letters are gone but icons are displayed. Strange situation and it seems the only way to regain functionality back is to turn the laptop off by long pressing the power button.
