Several settings missing, no internet, function key unresponsive, help

So if I'm understanding correctly you created a new flash drive with Ubuntu, is this a newer version of Ubuntu or still 24.0 and are you livebooted now or did you also reinstall?
It's not a new flash, it's the old one I used originally to install Ubuntu on that machine as well as two others (which are both still running fine), and yea it's still the 24.0 version. I kept that flash drive in case I needed it for another install at some point. That's why I didn't think it was a bad ISO download as it works perfectly fine on my main laptop and it worked perfectly fine on that one as well until one day it just didn't, possibly because of dualboot shenanigans but unclear yet. And it is just livebooted, I didn't do a reinstall yet to wait for your feedback. But does it mean that really the best option would be to just reinstall it?

If it's the same flash drive and you didn't write the iso file to it again than I would say maybe something related to a dual-boot, not sure if you are still dual-booting? Before you had the issue and were live booted, were you able to see the network interfaces as well or was it only until you actually installed that you didn't see the network interfaces?

We are still using dual-boot with Windows 10 on that machine as it's still needed for a few things. The laptop originally came with Win 10, then I installed Ubuntu 24.0 on it later from that same flashdrive I used now. Ubuntu was fully locally installed on the machine and worked fine for a few months, no network issues at all. We were also able to swap between Windows and Ubuntu fine, though my housemate mentioned he noticed Windows would sometimes mess with things on Ubuntu's end but it didn't sound like anything serious until now. Then we booted it up one day and shenanigans. So sounds like that was likely the problem, even though secure boot and quick start have been long disabled, guess it still just managed to mess with the system. Ideally we will phase out Windows entirely at some point, but it just has to stick around for a little bit longer.

Well, still wanted to ask if there could be a way to fix this without reinstalling the OS? At least we know now the system generally is compatible, just that dual-boot messed something up. I'm asking because apparently my housemate did a lot of setup and adjustments on that laptop and would rather not want to start over. So we're wondering if there could still be a way to salvage it?

I've been thinking about this, the only thing I can say is that if the network interfaces work while live booted with Ubuntu 24.04, it should also work when installed because the iso has the same kernel as the one that is installed during installation. The only thing I can think of is that some Windows setting has effect on the network interfaces not showing up while booted into Ubuntu, so probably won't have to reinstall but just figure out what Windows setting in causing it. However I'm not much of a help with that because I haven't dual-booted in ages.

I did find a topic about it, which maybe of help.
In short people say:
1. Disable fast-boot in Windows, there also seems to be a fast-boot feature in the BIOS.
2. Disable Wake-on-LAN in BIOS
3. Disable PME in BIOS

I also found this archwiki page where they have some tips for dual-booting, one of them being also to disable hibernation in Windows. Maybe there are other things mentioned that might help you?

Ok I will give these a shot, thank you so much for all your help so far!

Hey - so this hits pretty close to where I'm at at the moment

Just tried to move to linux

have installed Ubuntu 6.17.0-23 off a usb key

everything works fine, love it
I update to kernel 6.17.0-29 - No more internet
as in - there's no Wifi logo, nor Ethernet logo.
i also use Realtek Hardware.

I spent some time trying to understand, the odd thing is that if I boot back to the other kernel (-23), everything still works.
"Ip -a" loops back 4 different network items :
0 -loopback,
1 - my Ethernet on Motherboard (fried... lightning killed that one)
2 + 3 - And my 2 ports off of a realtek chip I installed on the motherboard: includes both wifi + ethernet.

I open 6.17.0-29 - nothing.....
ip -a sends only loopback

it can see the hardware if i list it, but not the drivers...

OS told me to run apt --fix-broken install

that fedback "errors were encountered while processing r8168-dkms" but nothing after that ... :(

IF anyone feels like they can help, I'm all ears.

right now i keep having to boot and manually select the old kernel, it's not great!

@f33dm3bits :-

It could also simply be a crap ISO download, Maarten. It happens more often than many people are prepared to admit to....

I will admit that "gaming" laptops often come with some decidedly non-standard hardware!

Mike. ;)
Agreed:-
A corrupt .iso or one that hasn't been verified usually has this type of behavior and functionality issues.
