I am sitting here now on my little dell inspiron 3179 running zorin. This machine is basically replacing my ipad for sofa surfing. It was a massive turd on windows 11. Like 5 min plus to a usable system. I use usable loosely there as well, to a swift little rig that can do anything I would want for basic computing.
I am going to move my wife to zorin and my son and my systems are going to run garuda. I have to figure out what I need to use for photo/video/podcast software on linux but that will come. I am sure it will be way easier and more cost effective to build a solution on linux than windows.

Welcome to the forums
your 8-year-old dell duo was an entry level device so even with the I3 CPU was never going to win any races, a lightweight build like Zorin is a good choice. as for your future rendering ambitions, I recommend you use something with a fair bit of extra grunt,

You may get some pushback. Not everyone wants to use Linux and it's probably best to explain the benefits before offering to change their entire operating system. That said, it's not too difficult to move to Linux - especially if you don't have to do the installation and maintenance. Generally speaking, it should just work.

We have already been talking about it for awhile now. I have to set up a local "onedrive" server. I already have it but I am having some issues with it recognising the PCI mounted NVME card for OS. It's an older acer system, and I have been talking to someone on the acer forum about it and he said it should work. I am going to use TrueNas for my server. Hopefully I can get it to work and then be able to access it remotely with our phones and devices when on the road.

I already have that. I have a dell xps 8940. 10700, 128gb of ram, 2070 super, 4tb nvme, 2 1tb ssd and a 8tb HDD.
Thats my workstation.
My notebook is a dell inspiron 5406 with a 1165G7, 64gb of ram 4tb ssd and Xe graphics.
My wife's notebook is the Dell inspiron 5468 with a intel gold processor 615 graphics an 32gb of ram with a 1tb ssd and my son's notebook is an MSI cyborg with a 12700, 16gb of ram (64gb will be installed soon) and a 2070 super and 512gb of ssd for now.
The small dell I am using now is just my iPad replacement and it works great for that.

PCI mounted NVME card for OS.
Check the PCIe settings in the eufi/bios and the boot order preferences in the boot menu.

I have tried that. For some reason TrueNas does not recognise it. I am going to dive back into it soon. I am off for 8 weeks now to recover from bowel surgery. I can't lift anything heavy or move or stretch much so, I have to wait for a few weeks to get the machine setup on a monitor. I will report back when I get it up and running.

that one may be problematic, I have had various Media star products across my bench over the years.
