I have an Android phone Motorola G9 Play. I can wire connect to my PC and it appears on my Desktop. That's where all stops. I would like to download the phone photos to my photo storage on the PC - Mint Cinnamon 22.1
Please advise as to how best that may be done (or not).
As Donald would say, Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Welcome to the forums, have a great time here.

If it appears on the desktop it means it is mounted which is good.

What happens when you double click that icon? It should open and show you a folder called DCIM. That's where your pics should be.

I have used shotwell ...available in Linux Mint Software Manager. Takes a bit of getting used to......but it is very capable.

If I was to do it all again, I might give Ente a try. it comes highly recommended and does have a free app and a priced app, depending on exactly what you want from it: https://ente.io/

@Condobloke that'll do it as well indeed.

By the way some Android phones are weird these days. I have encountered instances that a distro (can't remember which one but Mint also on occasions) won't recognize an attached phone. Dunno if that has anything to do with any version of Android or missing drivers or whatever.

Since a couple of months I have helped a lot people in my social circle transition from Windows to mint (weapon of choice) and I did get a few "complaints" from people that the Mint will not mount a phone.
No biggie because there is always bluetooth but still. Worth taking a look at.

That might be more down to the user, perhaps. Especially if they are 'new' to Linux.

I don't use an Android phone, having always owned an iPhone....so whether that may be an android thing i have zero clue. When I used shotwell, it recognised my neighbours phone (android) immediately. Whether Linux mint recognised it as well ..... no idea, and didnt go looking for any other recognition source. I had my hands full with 7000 photos to organise for him. (btw....never again !)

Not sure. will look into it as it is kind of interesting.

I run an SFTP server on my android phone (only enabled when I want it) and run a periodic process on my PC that checks for the phone to be accepting connections. Once connected, it checks for files in a specific directory (a subdirectory of the main photos directory) on the phone. I drop any pics I want to export from the phone into that subdirextory, enable the SFTP server and, a minute or two later they magically appear on my PC. By my preference the files are deleted from the phone after the transfer.

Still hoping (in vain) for a way to do exactly this with an iPhone, but it's not looking good.

Have you first tried this?

Plug the device in via USB, swipe down the notification panel, tap the "Charging via USB" notification, and select Transfer files (MTP) or PTP.

If you do that, your computer will likely automatically mount it, where you can then access it from the file manager.

I use an app named LocalSend to transfer data to/from my phone - as long as both the computer and the phone are on the same network (wifi) and the ports are opened, it just works. --> https://localsend.org/download

This un-gifted amateur has finally cracked the methodology with the particular help of theLegionWithin and KGill above.

My thanks to you all for providing avenues to explore.

Chris.
