  • Stupid day today, got to sit in the car with the engine running for about 2 hrs whilst the satnav updates. [Approx 14gb of updates via USB] the car is on a public highway so to be legal in the UK i have to be in the driver's seat if the engine is running and wearing a seat belt, although I am not going anywhere. Still its only once a year

Reminds me of a old computer that would never stop updating... It became A running Joke in school when it would update for hours.. then fail to update and rollback... Aren't updates fun? :) Anyway, glad to hear it's over with.

Is it just me or do many of the so-called "safety laws" almost seem to be written out of malicious intent?

many of them cause frustration and delays for people and cause confusion and sometimes even cause danger in other ways.

its the way the world has had to go, countries where litigation is the norm [us for example] lawmakers need to screw down every nut and bolt to remove loopholes, but laws still have to be simple enough for what we call the lowest common denominator [those that lack any sense] one of my favourite would be the health and safety sign above an industrial gas range that states, Warning this appliance may get hot during use.
Tried Windows 11 today, Didn't like it one bit, not intuitive flashy home screen and more adverts than watching commercial TV for the night.
My Paresthesia has been bad the last couple of days, hand is only working at Mach 0.2 whilst brain is running ahead at Mach 2,5

I noticed you're making a lot of typos recently, is it because of this?
    Brickwizard
    Brickwizard
Quite possibly, when it's bad I can't even feel my fingers hitting 2 keys without realising is not unusual, some of what you may think are typos may be the difference in Oxbridge [perceived] English and American
    CaffeineAddict
    CaffeineAddict
No it's not difference of British and American, I know some diffs like color vs colour etc. but it's not this kind of typos. I hope you recover.
I am losing the will to live, this morning i tried to order online a Christmas present for great-granddaughter, I found a shop with what we want [had to tick the I am human box] found the item page click add to basket, went to the bottom clicked check out, and nothing happened [My normal set up is Linux with Firefox, with ghostery] tried several times and nothing, so installed Chrome, went to the site, yes Im human, found the item, added to basket clicked for checkout and got 2 pages of Captua , and woo hoo im on the check-out page, i fill in everything go to the bottom and click buy now, and everything goes up the shoot again, it showed a union flag next to it is said phone number, so i entered my landline, and it froze with the message this is not a mobile number, IT didn't ask for a mobile number it just said phone number.as most of you know I don't have a mobile phone, so now i have to waste half a day to drive to their nearest shop in hopes they haven't sold out.

that's odd, you'd think a business would be happy for money from any source and wouldnt try too hard to verify a phone #. maybe an oversight?
Been having problems with the Internet dropping out [5 times over Tues and Weds AM] rang EE, lad at other end ran a few tests, I got him to run some extras they didn't usually do, found nothing wrong except the logs that showed reduce speed and drop outs] I will send you an engineer, why I asked to check your set up he said, nothing wrong with my set up i told him, still they insisted and he came this morning and found nothing wrong my end. Came to the conclusion BT had a fault which someone else reported, and they fixed it yesterday

Speaking of connectivity, I noticed that a new set of lines bridged a gap. Electricity doesn't bridge the gap, but the telephone lines and fiber lines bridge the gap.

I'm not too concerned with the electricity. I can go a long time without mains connectivity. But, it appears that my fiber might be on two different grids. We'll see how it holds up this winter.

My area deals with a absurd amount of throttling but of course the first thing they do is blame the client's router, OS, hardware ad nausium..

sometimes the pebkac error is actually on the service provider side

in such a situation you should ask to speak with a higher level professional because you are dealing with a very serious ID-10-T error
Congrats on the promotion, Brian. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy! Nice one!

Nah, you'll be fine. Sounds like you're not exactly a raw beginner, anyway. Moderation's the same everywhere; only the software changes, and we can always learn our way around that....

I am up to my neck in the brown smelly stuff, this morning I lost my wedding ring it was a silver one Jean had made for me in Greece [I don't like gold] she went ape sh*t [married for 50 years] put the call-out on the local FB page, chances of it being found slim, chances of someone honest finding it, about the same as finding 500kg of rocking horse poo.

I took another walk down to the Garage yesterday, no luck had another look round the house, no luck, spent hours looking at Greek and Cypriot jewellers to find a replacement I found one the same size and weight but totally different in looks.
Jean had mine made for me the face of ring body had olive leaves around it, and the centre had a worry band [a loose fitting band you can rotate] which had a row of beading on either side and a Greek key round the centre, so it's a one-off. As it was silver, I never thought to get it insured

If nothing else works, maybe try the art of letting go. Things come and go. Me and my significant other no longer wear our rings, also made on order. They are there somewhere, forgotten. The internal peace is worth of letting go things we cannot change.
well the phone and internet were due to be changed at 1pm my time today, get up at 5am [as usual] switched on and no internet, pick up phone still a line there, scratch head, get out new router for the new ISP, plug it in and after some hassle the internet is on, I have just received an e-mail telling me my new service came on line at 1-30am this morning time on the e-mail 0645. I am on 40 MB at the exchange and getting 39.7 MB at the router, only problem so far inxi -w cannot locate me

I use a weather extension in my browser, though I also have a weather station on the property. When I get fiber, I'll attach the weather station to my internet (on its own dedicated subnet), Then, people can see what the weather is at my house. Right now, the only weather station in the area is down in the village and is at a much lower altitude than I'm at. So, we have a weather station that's capable of reporting online. It's just not hooked up to the public web at this time.

It's a fairly new addition. I've had similar stations but Mother Nature steals them. They're on a pole that's embedded in a 4' deep tube of concrete. The pole is fine. They're attached with strong u-bolts and properly torqued. But, invariably, Mother Nature steals them.

As the crow flies, I'm not far from Mt. Washington. They hold the world record, at wind speeds of 231 (not a typo) mph. That's 327 km/h. I regularly get sustained wind speeds at 100 km/h (~60 mph). Gusts over 100 mph (~160 km/h) are common. My house is hooked to the basement by special j-bolts placed at a regulararity twice the minimum spec.

Anyhow, I wrote all that just to say that I use a browser extension for my weather forecasts. (I sometimes listen to NOAA, if it's a major event. You don't have that option.)

Technically, I use one extension for NOAA in my browser, but that's not something you can do. Your country probably has something similar.

The weather extension I also use is "Weatherly" and it does a pretty good job at showing me the weather. They do a lot to make you want to pay for the extension, but there's no real need to do so. It works just fine without giving them any money. I assume it's a global thing and will get the weather for you regardless of where you are.

I use two and kind of approximate to guess what my weather is actually going to be. I can compare and contrast the sources, including my own data, to make good guesses as to what the real weather is going to be. But, unless you live in an area where you have extreme weather events, Weatherly will likely work for you.

thanks that seems ok to me, inxi -w started working except it doesn't seem able to find where i am now,.
Yes the world has gone mad, our landline changes from digital to VoIP in a couple of weeks, as VoIP doesn't work if there is a power cut [we get about half a dozen a year] we decided to get a cheap mobile phone for the wife, found one she liked on Amazon, and tried to order it [a one off purchase] when i clicked buy now it took me to the normal e-mail/delivery details, then asked for a mobile number, I tried to bypass it and failed, we have not got a mobile phone , we are trying to order one, how the hell can we give a number for something we dont have, .. sent them a complaint and the basic answer was tough.

Sorry to hear about your illness, Brian, and I seem to have missed your birthday also. Happy belated birthday mate! My wife decided, a couple years ago, to ditch the flip phone and upgrade to a smart phone. We used the GPS function on it yesterday, when my Garmin could not find an address, even though it worked fine a couple days prior on the same address. Bugger! I had a doctor appointment about 100+ miles away. We made it there and back. I hope you and your wife are better soon. Happy trails!

Many years ago my wife has a Nokia 3310 she could text and do all she needed, then one Christmas [about 4 years ago] she spilt a full glass of rum on it, the phone was soaked and gave up the ghost, so I got her a new basic phone, she has done nothing but complain she can't use it,it doesn't work, she doesn't understand it , I can't understand why, it has the 3310 board and OS, one button is different, the main button on the 3310 had a rocker action for selecting and navigating, this one had a ring around the main button for this purposes, but I cannot get her to understand or use it, she has throw it across the room many times, I gave up and ditched it, so god only knows [to quote Brian Wilson] how i am going to get her to use a smartphone.

Yeah, Betty uses hers for everything but a phoneo_O. The one thing she has not mastered, mostly because she does not want to, is answering a call. Good thing we have a landline!. Ours is VOIP, part of our cable Phone/Internet package, so I am with you on your original posting. Our power meter it linked by cell to the company, so they can read it remotely, so when we lose power they also lose the connection to it. I am hoping that they see that and know what it means when they lose connection with a whole area of meters. It seems to work that way.

    Ciao for now,
    Paul
Hi Brickwizard. I have sorted my problems (for now) and about to put up a more detailed explanation, with learning points for others. Thanks for your support. Best, J

Just found a re-use Dell latitude 5490 I5-8250u, 16gb, 480gb SSD, but its only a 14 inch, would have preferred a 15.6 inch, but the cheapest of similar spec was more than twice the price

we are a village of just under 400 homes, about 1/2 mile [.7 K] away over the hill, they are building around 800 new homes, I am blaming them for my poor connections the last few weeks, today has been particularly bad, dropping out every few minutes.

Feel like sh*t, been ill for the last 4 days, missed daughter's 25 th wedding anniversary, somehow managed to delete saved private e-mails on my provider server going back to 1990, many had attachments I wanted to keep, tried logging in here but just could not cope. Even cancelled holiday [we were ment to be driving the 51/2 hrs to Cornwall today]

, It's only a small site so as KGIII would say it's a janitorial job, make sure new members stick to the site rules, approve now member post sweep out and dispose of any crud. And as the only one in my time zone it speeds up new post approvals, [It use to take up to 48 hrs to get a post approved as the development team did not visit the forums very often]
