I recently bought Acer Nitro 5 laptop.I am encountering boot issue with linux mint 19.3
Specifications:
Model : Acer Nitro AN515-43

1) Processor : AMD Ryzen 5 3550H
2) RAM : 8 GB
3) Hard Drives: 238.47 GB SSD and 1 TB HDD
4) Graphics Devices : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 and AMD Radeon(TM) Vega 8

I got it with windows 10. I need Linux distros as secondary OS. So i installed Linux Mint 19.3.
Installation was good and completed. But after installation, i encountering black screen OFTEN when i choose Linux in GRUB menu.I also encountering issues like crashing chrome, crashing celluloid(video player)

I searched through internet and found that nomodeset will solve this issue. So i did what i saw in forums. Yes it did work! But unfortunately, once i boot with linux with nomodeset, driver manager warns me that video driver is not installed and that battery performance will be high. Also i can not alter brightness level which is to the maximum when booted with nomodeset option.

I thought that since inux mint 19.3 was released recently, it might be a problem to AMD processor. So i thought of installing linux mint 19.2.

When tried to install 19.2, i got some 6 warning messages (attached below) but it seems i can install 19.2 but what i thought i will face if i installed 19.2 will be the same as that of 19.3.Because i see those 6 lines in the screen whenever i boot with linux mint 19.3.So i just did shutdown my laptop.

It is also to be noted that: i can boot into linux without the above mentioned problem(black screen) or it boots normally without using nomodeset.

I searched in internet for about a week but still i couldn't solve it.Please help me with my problem.I would also be happy if i got any linux distro that would be working fine with my device.

I would like to mention some areas i encountered when i searched the internet for answers so that i hope it would be helpful to you:
1) secure boot
2) fast boot
3) UEFI

I misunderstood that the problem is due to the AMD ryzen 5 processor, but now i realize that it is the Nvidia driver package causing the troubles.

Previously i had installed linux recommended nvidia package from the driver manager.

Now,after i uninstalled it and installed open source nvidia package, no boot issue or chrome crash or cellulid crash is encountered

The problem was probably the default open source Nvidea driver Nouveau. While it works, it doesn't work well. It's the first thing I change after a new install. For me, it causes my laptop to freeze whenever I try to reboot it. It has other side effects like the ones you described above. Glad you found it so quickly. Welcome to Linux.org, too.

Thank you. I uninstalled driver and installed open source driver.now my device works good.

After uninstalling recommend driver and installation of open source driver, i mentioned that everything was fine. But it didn't last for a day.
I don't know why...i think its because of an update i did after changing driver as mentioned above.

Now again i am encountering similar problems... . Same black screen on restart, Chrome hangs often, linux os is slow.

I searched where i found that kernel 5.3 crashes nvidia...

So i just decided to boot linux with kernel 5.0 version in grub menu and just wait for either nvidia or kernel updates so that i wish they would have fixed this issue in the forthcoming update.

If there is any other way please let me know. Thanks in advance!

I’m having same black screen problem. Mint 19.3
hope someone has some suggestions.

Hi :)
After 5 installation (with different variants) with Mint 19.3 on a new PC (AMD A6, Radeon R5) and each time a black screen after the very first system's updates and reboot, i've finally installed a Mint 19.1 with success, without any problem after updates and reboot. Hope it can helps.
