Hi Everyone,
Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas and a successful 2026.

This is just a General statement, but I would like to see it go somewhere and actually come into fruition.

We are a Mobile electronics provider, with the main focus as part of expanding our catalogue is Telematics for the Heavy vehicle and Specialised Transport industries.

When you look at Transport Telematics components, especially ELD (Electronic Log Diaries), they're all either Apps which gets installed on phones, or they come pre-installed into Android devices. So no matter where you look regarding this, it is all Android.

I am just stepping my toes into the pool developing software using Python, and I am watching a number of helpful videos where they show how applications are made - which may I say does give a lot of inspiration.

I understand there is Buildroot, Qt and other applications you can use, but even then, that has been rather tricky and difficult to work with

What would be nice to see is Linux Mobile device Operating systems which can replace any Android OS on any tablet without the risk of the device being "Bricked", and at the same time, for Hardware Manufacturers to lose the Obsession of Android Only.
And at the same time, it would be nice if there is a Linux Tablet OS which can be programmed and configured, as well as allowing custom applications to be developed using GUI, and then can be uploaded as an actual custom mobile OS or Mobile Distro, ready to deploy onto the Mobile device.

Forgive me if something like this does exist and I don't know about it. If something like this does exist, can you advise on this please.

In conclusion, it would be nice to be able to develop touch screen devices for all industries that can be developed by anyone, including beginners...

What are your thoughts?

Ubuntu touch is a linux distro for android phones.

While Android is technically using a Linux kernel, it's not really a full-fledged Linux. If you use a full-fledged Linux, you'll have a more difficult time making it strictly proprietary. They don't want people to modify these devices, and they sure as heck don't want to share the source code.

There are several mobile Linux OS's as yet none have made a significant impact on the market

Would it be worthwhile to develop something that would make a significant impact on the Market?

I would like to contribute, but at this time, I would only be able to contribute by way of periodical donations.

sure, why not? the caveat is that a product that deals with fleet management/safety is probably not going to be used by a commercial interest - they need liability when something invariably fails and costs them money.

Of course.

I'm not just talking about Fleet management. I am talking broadly, from Industrial PLC to anything IoT, or even if a hobbyist wants to create something which would usually be found on an Android or iOS device - for example a Home weather station or Remote Silo level monitoring...

Would someone or a number of people be interested in taking on the challenge of creating an Android replacement Mobile device OS?
And if so, how can a donation pool (or similar) be formed and donations be made?

By the way, I have reached out to Mediatek on their Forum, and to no surprise - not a single reply. Nor did I get an answer when I emailed them

You can't be serious.

If you're serious, and have the capacity, then you should create your own business to produce and sell Linux mobile OS as that's IMO the most affordable method to fund production.

I am better with Hardware than with Software.

And at the same time, I would want this concept to be Community Driven, so if someone wants to get into IoT and offer solutions which involve the use of Touch screen devices, then they can easily develop and succeed

I've talked to a few men that turned their Android devices around the Ubuntu Touch.
One of them had success. The other..... his tablet is now a brick.

With this sort of practice along with some ingenuity and much collaboration, I strongly believe that once you root the device you had better know what you are doing.
I've given some thought to this last year and my thinking is that one will have to learn how to write code.

I'm still learning how to write code and believe me if I were well versed this would most certainly be a project for me!

This site has a few options that you might find interesting. There's the Juno which looks quite powerful and a couple of truck mount options.. https://www.cpdevice.com/best-linux-tablets/

Hi Mate,
Thanks for the lead.

The company is very good. I was going to start using their product. But what has happened is that the Government body regarding this project threw a spanner in the works and mandated that the Tablet needs to be portable and can be handed to the Vehicle inspectors.
Permanent fixture devices aren't permitted

Hi everyone,
I have just started a new thread with potential good news regarding Linux on Mobile devices.

Some of you may know this already, but I have brought this thread up for people who aren't aware of easily installing Linux onto a device
