Hi everyone! I need advice on buying replacements for laptop keycaps. I removed one of my keys recently because it was sticking, and I thought maybe something had spilled on it, and the key broke. I need to get a replacement, but I'm not sure where (Or.... How. Do I need to buy a whole set just for one key?). Could anyone give me recommendations? This computer is an HP Model 14 with a backlit keyboard in silver, if that helps. The keycap I'm looking for is 1.5 cm by 1.5 cm, and (ideally) it'd be the same color as all the other keys. Any help appreciated (if I need to put this thread somewhere else, that's okay)

For laptop you'll likely need to buy whole keyboard and replace it.
That's unfortunate. I'll probably just give the rest of the keyboard (minus the 7 key) to a friend of mine, cause the rest of this one works perfectly well. I did try to see if any nearby places had parts, but no luck.

yes you can buy single keys and backs depending on your country and which keyboard .. this example is a uk supplier

Do you know if they ship to the US? Because if so, this is great. I even found the exact model I'm looking for. if they don't ship to the states, are there any you know of that do?

You will have to contact them and ask, I would expect they will want extra shipping cost, if not a complete replacement keyboard [depending on colour and model] are around $25 to $40 shipped from China

Hm, alright. I did scour their store for something that matches the hinge I'm using, but the only one that looks the same (not sure of the size) is for an HP Envy, while my computer is a HP Laptop 14-dq0xxx (these hinges from their site look nothing alike). Should I ask them that as well, just to make sure I'm not getting the wrong size?

The UK sellers site says

PLEASE READ INFORMATION BELOW CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING

Since laptops of the same model usually use keyboards with different types of retainer/clips, please carefully compare your keyboard keys with the keys sold here before proceeding. If unsure, we may exchange pictures for further comparison.

Please do not buy keys simply because you have a laptop with the same model.

Hmmmm.... Okay. Just to be on the safe side, I'll get the one with the right model and hinge (but wrong color), so there's nothing that I have to figure out. If I have some extra money, I'll get the one with the wrong model, right hinge, and right color. For now, thanks for the help.

you could also try HP spares US, but they do quote the following.

Replacement Laptop Keys for HP Laptops

If you need to replace specific keys on your HP laptop keyboard, here's a general guide to assist you:

  1. Identify the Model: First, determine the exact model of your HP laptop. This is crucial because different models have different keyboard layouts and keys.
  2. Find the Spare Part Number: Consult the service guide or the maintenance manual specific to your laptop model to find the spare part number for the keys or components you need to replace. These manuals often list part numbers for various regions and languages.
  3. Order the Replacement Part: Once you have the correct part number, you can order the replacement keys directly from HP's parts store or other authorized distributors.
  4. Replacing the Key:
  5. Remove the Old Key: Carefully lift off the keycap. You might need to use a tool like a spudger or a flathead screwdriver. Be careful not to damage the surrounding keys or mechanisms.
  6. Install the New Key: Align the keycap with the scissor mechanism or butterfly clip (depending on your laptop model) and press down gently yet firmly until it clicks into place.
  7. Testing: After replacing the key, test it to ensure it functions just like the original. Check for full range of motion and responsiveness.

If you do not have the service guide for your laptop, you can typically find it on the HP Support website by entering your laptop's model number.
