Installed Steam from XBPS and play games both native and with Proton
At some point I wanted to play The Movies and added it as a third-party game
but without Windows Media Player it won't run and I'm looking for a way to fix it

First I tried this method but unfortunately it didn't work
Then I tried this. It required Wine and I installed it but it didn't help either and on the contrary it broke all my games

When I press the play button it tells me that the game is starting and then immediately turns off as if I hadn't pressed anything

@silly_potato :-

At a guess, I would say the breakage was your own doing.....through not being aware of how the 'backend' functions.

As I understand it, Proton runs on top of WINE. Your installing WINE separately has probably over-written Proton's own version of WINE with a different one. I'm surprised the package-management system would allow you to do this, TBH.....

I'm not an expert in all this stuff. We do have members that know much more about it than I do, but some of them are probably asleep ATM (it's the 'time-zone' thing; the membership is spread out all round the globe, so be patient and give it 24 hrs).

I'll "call" some of them now. @f33dm3bits is into gaming in quite a big way......as are @TheProf and @rado84 . Somebody should be along to help fairly soon.

I have no idea what you did. But Proton is separate from Wine. What I would do is reset your Steam installation and remove your current Wine configuration.

This removes your Wine configuration.
Code:
rm -rf ~/.wine

This removes your Steam configuration and will remove all installed games if you installed them in the default location.
Code:
rm -rf ~/.steam*
Then Launch Steam again, install your games which you run through Proton and you should be able to play them again.

Then install Lutris to run your The movies game.

The Lutris scripts will handle all the dependencies for you, use that to install your game, The Movies.

Thank you very much you helped me out
Steam works again and games launch
I will try Lutris a little later to launch The Movies
I'll definitely write how it goes which I really hope for :)

@f33dm3bits :-

Thanks for responding to the OP, Maarten. I know very little about Proton and Lutris, though I do have quite a bit of experience with WINE. (I know it's involved in all this stuff somewhere, but I have NO idea of just HOW.....)

I'm speaking as a 'non-gamer'.....or at best, as an occasional "dabbler"!

If you edit your first post in the thread, there's a prefix section at the top of the editor. You can change that to 'solved'.

Just note the message under the install script: "None of the WMV movies seem to work, the game is fully playable."

You can also try it with Heroic Games Launcher if you don't like Lutris or just try them both.

Ah, you're very welcome, my friend. That's why many of us are here......because we just LIKE helping people. Between us, we probably know enough about most, if not ALL aspects of Linux to be able to help folks with the majority of issues.

You picked the right place, too; the friendliest & most helpful Linux forum on the web! And that's NO word of a lie.

Stay cool..! :D
