Solved Zoom links won't open for school.

Hey all!

I use a IPad Air and my surface pro 8 that runs Kubuntu 25.10 on the surface-kernel for school. I'm trying to replace more of it with my surface, as the GUI does work well for me on here. I have an issue that won't let me click on class links in the chat. I can mostly get around them but some are extremely long and time consuming to type, (like Padlet). Is there anything that can be done to fix the non-link clicking issue, or should I just stick with the Air for the meeting-side of the work? Thank you all for your time.

Have you tried using copy/paste for the links? Copying the link, then pasting it into the browser should work. A little clunky, but a lot easier than typing everything by hand. I haven't run any Ubuntu variant in almost 20 years, but there should be a setting for associating links with applications. I don't know what application you want to use to open those links.

Yep. I did try that on my KDE-side of the system. It sadly does not work. Does not copy, even from the context menus. Gnome works, but most of what I use recently is on the KDE side.

I use firefox as most of these are web apps.
I will look into that! Thanks!

edit- I have not found the Link associations for zoom, sadly.
I need to reorder my system and get this straightened out.

In KDE Plasma, open System Settings, on the left scroll down to Apps & Windows, Default Applications, and File Associations. You can set many associations there, and add applications for filetypes.

Puppy has long had a trick up her sleeve.....one that frequently lets us 'work round' situations where 'normal' copy/paste doesn't seem to function.

By merely highlighting whatever text you want to copy, this is automatically copied to Puppy's clipboard without you needing to TELL her to 'copy'. To 'paste', all you then need to do is to 'middle-click' on your scroll-wheel...et voilà! Pasted text where you want it...

I somehow doubt this works anywhere else, though. (If you have a very old mouse, without a scroll-wheel - or wish to emulate this on a laptop - simply press left- and right-click simultaneously. Bob's yr uncle.....sorted).

However; as @deb_user says, opening the link in the browser should work JUST as well. On occasion, even today, slightly 'clunky' workarounds are still necessary at times.....and it's not always Linux's fault, either! Experience, over time, will let you build up a repertoire of workarounds for various situations. Eventually, you'll get so's you run through them without even thinking about it....

(I use Chrome for this. Chromium-based browsers will let you turn ANY website into a 'webapp'.....which will then open in its own dedicated window, and if you know what you're doing, can even be set-up to open from their own Menu-entry. Just as though they were a desktop client in the first place.....

In the case of Zoom - with it being Electron-based - the desktop-client looks & behaves identically to the website anyway. As far as I'm concerned, the webapp running in its own window IS the desktop client.)

Using middle-click to copy/paste highlighted text is, AFAIK, universal. It works in every distro and desktop environment I've used, although I haven't used them all. It's identical to using ctrl-c and ctrl-v, but more convenient. I use it a lot, it's far from a Puppy-only thing.

Hmm. That's strange. I try to open the links on the 'Fox, but it acts as if nothing is there.
I do use the Double click method (use that on the Fruit's machines a lot..) but even that does not seem to work on zoom (Just brings up the context menu). It does work on Firefox though.
Zoom still won't let me cut/paste the links to even open on the browser .
But thanks for the tips!

I haven't run Zoom as a standalone application in a very long time. I just open meetings in Firefox. And I've never owned a Surface. About all I can do is suggest methods from a thought experiment, and I'm about out of those.

Hmm... I'd do things like make sure Zoom is whitelisted in your ad-blocking setup. There's the little shield on the absolute left of the address bar. Clicking that should reveal some settings. Make sure the site's allowed to use your camera and microphone.

Finally, try a few other browsers out there -- specifically the more popular ones that tend to stay the most current.

Zoom has a known bug (to me, at least) where the password will not copy and paste into the field using the mouse. Sometimes I have to type it.

It's not a new bug. Been happening for several years. Sounds like you found the bug.

Debian 13 and KDE Plasma.

Edit: Zoom is the only app that exhibits this problem.

Yep! That's pretty much it on the links-side, but with the chat links.
It works on the browser version now, so I can do the work that's needed.
