Hey all,

I've been running ProtonVPN on my Debian 12 ThinkPad X1 Carbon (4th Gen) for a long time, but since a few weeks ago the client won't load after a fresh boot. If I click the app, nothing happens. I've installed it via these instructions - https://protonvpn.com/support/official-linux-vpn-debian/

I can get it working normally if I use Bleachbit (non-root) to clear the system cache, but I have to do this every time I restart:

I had a look at gnome-logs and found a couple of events that look relevant, but I don't have the technical understanding to know what to do with it:

Debian is fully updated and I've uninstalled and re-installed ProtonVPN without any luck. Any suggestions for next steps or can any Linux wizards decipher what's going on in the logs?

Thanks :)

I use OpenVPN with a manual configuration when using ProtonVPN. I downloaded all of the TCP secure core config files and installed them. Then I made a directory of links and use the link called current to point to the correct link. Each link points back to the actual config file in another directory under /etc/openvpn/

Signed,

Matthew Campbell

Thanks Matthew, but I'd rather fix my existing issue rather than overhaul it. Is anyone able to decipher what's going on?

Do you have Timeshift set up?....any snapshots taken before this happened?

Of failing that, an image backup?

Put the question to Proton:

I installed Proton VPN following the method described below, and it works fine on my Debian 12 operating system. P:S. After installing Proton VPN, enter your system administrator password when the window appears

Looks to me like a Python Error - maybe missing a dependency - if you have the Proton VPN repository installed you can run - this should get any missing dependencies
sudo apt update

sudo apt install "python3-proton-vpn-*"

GUI application

App logs are stored under ~/.cache/Proton/VPN/logs/ directory.
User settings are under ~/.config/Proton/VPN/ directory.

Thanks guys, an update came through but now the entire app is missing and I came across dependency version issues when re-installing. Decided it was just easier to install the Flatpak - all working now. Thanks anyway :)
