Which Linux distro is best for a Toshiba Satellite A100 (32-bit, originally running Windows Vista Basic)?

I'm looking to revive an old Toshiba Satellite A100 laptop that originally came with 32-bit Windows Vista Basic. I’d like recommendations for a lightweight Linux distro that runs smoothly on this older hardware. Any suggestions for something that’s still supported and usable in 2025?

Specs:

  • 32-bit CPU
  • Likely 512MB–1GB RAM
  • Legacy BIOS (no UEFI)

Thanks in advance!

Here's an existing thread that may help:

Try Anti-X, or Puppy. Both should work. Slackware may also work, but I need to test it. I am running it on a 2005 ThinkPad with about the same requirements as your Toshiba. If you are interested in slackware, I will get back to you in a couple days once I am done testing installation.

@thinkinglinux11 & @itzdjns

I had a sudden inspirational flash, this may help both of you, there is an international charity distribution especially developed to bring life into old kit including low ram single and single CPU's , when originally developed it had an array of drivers included, some discontinued by other distributions, it is a big download but worth a try EMMABUNTUS LINUX

The majority of the distributions that I have tried have al the drivers needed for a smooth experience on the thinkpad. Many linux distros include drivers specific to ThinkPads such as Ultra-Nav. I am going to try out slackware next.

Hello @itzdjns Welcome to the Linux.org forum, enjoy!
there are several distro you can try Debian still offers 32 bit releases, MX and antix both do also. There is puppy.
Give them all a try and see which works best for you.

@thinkinglinux11
please keep post relating to your current problem on your own topic, this member has a Toshiba satellite not a thinkpad.

sorry, I was just explaining which distros he should try, and that some drivers may be missing for his Toshiba.
