if we are still talking dell N4050, then it has an I3/5 2nd gen which will defiantly be UEFI

For your macs, It should be EFI for the both of them. Looked around and seen it depends on if it is 32bit (Around early 2006) Or 64 bit- (lMid to late 2006 or later) ~ for your black MacBook.
You can check from the About menu from the very top left.
For your Air, it should be x64.
I have used a 2009 MBP with Lubuntu and it seemed fine (Nuked Mac-OS on disk) albeit it was 18.04. You can start there if you want.

Cinnamon is the most W7 looking DE that comes like that
If you have a spare flash drive- you can try the Live Boot Version of Linux Mint~with cinnamon Installed.
You can Try Lubuntu too- It is more lightweight- but more like Win9x (Win 95/98/2K/Me etc.)
It seemed to run well on my Pro.

.

BTW-Nice black Macbook! don't see much of them anymore.

Only made from 2006-2008. Usually if the case is in good shape-it might be worth more than a plain white one. It depends on if it has any cracks on the case.

If you want to put Linux on it- just make sure it is x32 or x64. If it is just a "Core"duo, it is x32. If it is a "Core2Duo" it is x64. It should help narrow down a distro for you.

This is a good one, [question wise] the MacBook core 2 duo were made from 2006 through to 2009 [last being sold early 2010] so is it rare, not as many would try to sell it as, I can pick them up for around £20 UK It had EFI [not UEFI] and the one I am about to dispose of is 32 bit only it has a dodgy hard drive and only 1Gb ram not cost-effective to repair/upgrade [a new IDE ATA PATA 60GB ]Hdd from china is about £85, I can find second hand around £30 [40GB] but as it would be as old I would not chance the spend.

I think it is for both of em!
Alrighty then!
to check for your Black mac,
Go to the apple Menu- and about this mac.
If it says early 2006 it is x32.
any date after that it is X64
On your Air-
Download Belana Etcher here- https://github.com/balena-io/etcher/releases?page=25
Go to 1.5.5
Download the DMG (Not the Blockmap)
Then Download Linux Mint from here- https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=322
Select one of the download "Mirrors" once you get to the site-
OR go to the Lubuntu download here- https://lubuntu.me/downloads/ if Cinnamon does not handle well.
You should verify the Checksum of the ISO by following the guide on Mint's site.
I don't know too much about that part,
but follow that guide and it should be alright.
If you need extra help, -https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://linuxmint-installation-guid...cQFnoECCIQAQ&usg=AOvVaw3VdyJk6locySUVI-G-Ec7c

You will need a flash-drive for this part,
Go Into Belana-etcher,
Follow the instructions-
Warning- Please do not use a flash-drive that has important data on it.
Warning 2- Unless if you plan to dual-boot, Or keep 10.6 or 10.11 installed alongside Linux, All data will be lost on said drives.
When Etcher is done, Restart your Mac and hold OPTION before the Bong.
A white screen should pop up with options.
It should come up as windows (Confusing, but the firmware just says anything but Mac is win)
Before committing to installing it, go test drive Cinnamon and see if it runs well on the air.
Shut down, and do the same for the Black.
If you are alright with the performance, go on and install.
If you want to keep 10.6 on with Linux- Choose Install Alongside.
If you just want 10.6 out of it, Erase and install Linux.
Just make sure you got your data off your Machine, if you plan to erase and install Linux.
Just follow steps through setup and you will be fine!

Just One warning, however. Make sure Etcher works well, as this is an older version (They dropped support for 10.11 a looong time ago)
IF you can't use that, Send another message and I will try to find something on my MBP that works better. ( I also run on my 2009 MBP). I hope this Helps!

I would say to be safe 16 gigs. If you try Lubuntu- 4 might be fine as I have a copy of that on DVD. Best of luck!

as if is a core 2 duo, it should be X64:D

if is a core 2 duo, it should be X64
as I said before I have a late 2006 core 2 duo on my bench [i was going to ditc i beforechrismas but due to weater we have not been down the tip] is it a 64 bit CPU Yes, is it a 64 bit machine NO the motherboard is 32 bit only

What is 32 bit motherboard? this is quite new to me, well I know too little about hardware stuff.
How do I tell if my mobo is 64 bit or 32 bit?
CA this was common practice on budget machines from around 2004 to 2010 [I have had several Acer's and a couple of other brands through the workshop over the last 20 years when I get an old box I am not familiar with I first try booting a live Debian stable 64 bit, if that doesn't work I will try MX-32 bit [I have older versions on DVD for machines that cannot be USB booted] I then use inxi -M to get the MB make and part number , then if necessary start searching
