Consolidated and updated issues Here

PRIOR TO Linux....

  • I would run a system cleaner (CCleaner) to remove all the cookies in persistent storage, browsing history... Even though Firefox is supposed to delete everything when I close the browser that doesn't actually happen.
  • Force-stop unnecessary processes and apps running in the back ground.
  • Clean up registry errors, disk defrag and clean up.
  • Set delays of some apps on start up so things won't get so slow

I haven't been using Linux long enough, to know how to do these things or which are actually something to be concerned about.

  • I use Flatsweep, but it doesn't seem to be helping speed things up.
  • I don't know how to find out what programs are running but shouldn't be or how to force them to stop.
    • I'm particularly suspicious of Zoom! I don't have a choice in the matter.

So here are my questions
  1. What can I use to clean up my system more thoroughly?
  2. How can I see what processes are running? (In that other OS it was called 'Task Manager')
  3. How can I keep certain apps from running on startup?
  4. How can I force them to stop?
  5. What else might be causing slow start up?

I'm experiencing a couple of other issues but this seems to be the best one to start with.

Sneak preview of future threads!
  1. Put Zoom in a VM
    1. It's a resource hog!
  2. What is going on with my network settings when I use my VPN??

Okay, this JUST happened and maybe it's related. IDK

FYI. I have not made any changes in Firefox settings

I was browsing this site, read the thread with the April Fools joke about flatpaks and snaps, opened the link in a second tab to read the article on ItsFoss.

I opened Gmail a new window. When I clicked sign in, a second tab opened with the exact same page. I could only see it as a preview, I couldn't switch tabs. I went back to the window with this site open and the FOSS April Fools article. I landed on a new tab. Again I couldn't switch between tabs.

I closed Firefox and tried again. Any bookmark I clicked on opened in another tab that I couldn't switch to.

I closed everything and rebooted my system. After waiting a painfully long time for things to get going I came back here. Everything seems okay for now, but I don't feel comfortable.

What's wrong with an ssd !!.... explore other things first...

The weird stuff you described just now...^^^.....I have zero clue
Were/are you connected to the vpn while doing that?
Are you consistently connected to the vpn ?...as in the whole time ?
If you are connected constantly....which country is it connecting to ?

....or which are actually something to be concerned about.

For the most part unnecessary, Linux does a pretty good job of cleaning up for itself.

Fragmentation, if any, is minimal. There is no real parallel to the Windows Registry.

Firefox issues I will leave to someone else, likewise VPNs.

Don't use Bleachbit for cleanup. For every 50 people who advocate it, 50 more experience difficulties/adverse results. We don't want you to be in the latter category.

I'll take a look around for a reliable cleanup utility, don't wait for me, before considering the advice of an experienced user.

Wiz.

I haven't been using my VPN. It seems like I should start with the slow start up issues. The VPN problem could be a symptom of those issues, maybe.

Startup Applications ....type that into the menu, and click on it
