Post a screenshot of your Desktop

Would ALL MEMBERS please bear in mind when posting images off site, those of us in the UK cannot receive images on imgur [as it is blocked to us]
If posting a screenshot or image on your computer, you can use the sites image app

Yep; the recent Online Safety Act back in July has blocked a shed-load of content to UK citizens.....even seemingly innocent sites, because of what some idiots will insist on trying to 'share'.

Imgur is completely off-limits to us. Me, I use PostImages.....which is not subject to the same idiotic restrictions. Hence, why mine don't 'disappear'.....

Unfortunately, this even applies to some of our staff. I haven't been able to view anything our esteemed @wizardfromoz has posted for months now.....because I know Chris has only ever used Imgur.

Not his fault, of course. Blame Starmer & Co..! :p

This could probably be turned into some sort of rule. It might be something we can manage in software, but I haven't looked.

This is what I tend to do, especially as of late. But it does add to hosting costs, which isn't necessarily a good thing.

I do wonder if this will eventually extend to more and more picture hosting sites, with a patchwork of laws based entirely on different jurisdictions. That'd be annoying.

At the same time, we tell people that they have to use English. We could say the onus is on the UK folks to use a VPN. But, well, I only know of one free and trustworthy VPN. (That would be Proton VPN.)

When I have a few minutes, then I open Anonsurf to see them, but it's slow, so I only use it when absolutely need to.

There's Proton VPN, which is the only free/unlimited VPN I would trust. You'll be limited in your end points. They make a browser extension, so you wouldn't have to have the whole system behind it. You could just turn it on when you needed it, right there in the browser.

I used to have many program icons on desktop when using Windows, however I've come to habit to use application menu to run programs, and my top used programs are all pinned to taskbar for quick access.

Also due to virtual desktops in KDE I have programs maximized to cover whole screen.

This all together makes desktop not needed and I rarely look at it at all.

On MS Windows, I went so far as to write a couple macros to be able to use my text editor as launcher so I almost never had to interact with the icons, Start button, etc. The only actual icon on the desktop was for the text editor. Somehow, over the years, I've let that slip and that box (Windows 7) now has a couple of dozen icons on its desktop - none of which I use. :)

On Linux, I use a little dock thingy (wbar) to display my icons so they're not strewn about the desktop. even with that, I sometimes find it just as easy to start applications from the command line - especially since, even if I'm not already in a terminal session, bringing up a new terminal is as easy as ctrl-alt-enter.

Virtual desktops keep the window clutter clutter manageable, but I have an irrational bias against maximizing windows even if one is going cover almost the whole screen anyway. And I keep a bunch of virtual desktops around, so if I want to rest my eyes a bit, I just click over to an empty one - that's where a muted, darkish wallpaper comes in handy.

@KGIII :-

.....and as soon as you turn THAT into a "rule", you're basically telling UK users to "Sod off. We don't want you around any longer".

Well, you won't see any more of ME if that's the case. But then, I doubt it would bother any of you in the slightest.....probably be glad to see the back of me!

(That's all right. You're a US-based community; you HAVE to cater to your native, core US members first & foremost. I understand that. I also appreciate that you shouldn't have to pay more in hosting costs just because OUR gov't are being a bunch of a*s-holes).

And VPNs are going to be a moot point anyway soon, 'cos the UK gov't are in the middle of figuring out ways to ban their use completely.

I suppose they could also ignore threads with Imgur links. Should we expect to maintain a list?

It might be better to ask people to upload directly in their post. We can do some image optimization to save space.

Frankly, I'm not entirely sure how to deal with it. Also, it isn't used that often.

Nah, you're OK. I was in a bit of a snarky mood the other night - annoyed about something which had gone wrong at home (long story; don't ask!). I shouldn't have let it spill over here on the Forum.

If I can't view an image, it's not exactly the end of the world. And the things frequently don't show anyway, for reasons beyond either my OR your control....

C'est la vie.

That's true but we mods/admins should be able to view all images, which was more what I was considering. We all should be able to see the images.

Our antipodean friend has posted more pictures this morning, so when i have finished my check i will have to go back to annonsurf to see them in context

Hmm... Maybe try using the @<user_Name> ping to ensure they see your post, or maybe send them a PM to nicely ask that they consider using a different upload site. You could perhaps recommend an alternative.

Some screenshot tools will automatically upload your image for you. Of those, they typically get sent to Imgur. They might not have an opion, or they might not know that an option exists. Also, it might be the only upload option that still works properly.
