A recent post would have us believe that saving your old laptop-computers from the massive eWaste Mountain killing Planet Earth; by breathing new life into them with Linux was a bad idea..? The post drew an analogy with washing machines in that modern washing machines were more energy efficient than old washing machines.
Wo; hold on there – really. When I was a baby in nappies 1950 at the start of the baby boon in post war WW2 Britain: Wash day was Monday no matter if you were a family of three or eight. Women judged themselves against the entire street for top washing..! As people started out on tech abandoning the outside tub and dolly for your ultra modern Twin Tub – one wash the other rinse with mangle; where you first dropped in, top loader, the whites and lightly soiled items then after a good hot wash you transferred them to the top loading rinse. You then added ever dirtier items into the wash till all was done using the same hot water and detergent. Energy efficient
Later using the power of advertising to con the public these old twin tubs were seen as obsolete 1950’s scrap to be replaced with what our poster deems as more modern efficient front loaders – I will leave you guys to work out the maths.
However some mad British people like myself don’t run with the sheep and question everything we are told… Long live the Twin Tub….

Quote: Since Hotpoint and Hoover stopped supplying twin tub washing machines Polar have supplied the market - Needing a wash within 5 minutes? With a twin tub you can have you washing ready to be hung on your line within 10 minutes - Low on electricity and water consumption a twin tub is the eco friendly way of washing. You are in control of your washing and how you want to do it.
Oh well – guess full circle back to the past….
Did I forget laptops-computers – not eco-friendly to inject Lovely Linux – they are not energy efficient – Modern is more efficient our poster said…. What…!
Can’t imagine Clive Sinclair would design anything inefficient – can you? The Spectrum was released as six different models, ranging from the entry level with 16 KB RAM released in 1982 to the ZX Spectrum +3 with 128 KB RAM and built in floppy disk drive in 1987; altogether they sold over 5 million units worldwide (not counting unofficial clones). The PSU power supply with 5V and 12V output, 2 Amp or 10W to 24W if you prefer – Ye Olde British Efficiency.
Let us take a look at my old 2008 HP Laptop which does not even need all of it’s 65W output with my gnu-linux miniMAX setup – then fast forward to a modern Dell XPS Laptop which needs double the power supply output - 130 Watt E5 Type-C AC Adapter and the Acer Predator Helios 300 comes with a 180W charger.
For an actual reading in use plug in a Wattmeter available everywhere - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wattmeter
Some refurbished laptop-computer outlets in UK are quoting carbon emission savings for each refurb product - cool
Well that’s my two penny’s worth - please feel free to disagree – Ziggi
ps: It is great to reflect once in a while; what a gift gnu-linux is. To allow this old fool to experiment and perhaps learn a little along the way...
