Good afternoon linux users ,

I am in the process of changing my OS after my lifetime of windows addictions .

I used from childhood/teenager years an amiga 500 , amiga CD32bit (upgraded to amiga 1200 with hard disk , SX1 ) to play most games from that golden era .
After the amiga was out of date and bankrupt i needed ( mostly my dad ) to buy pentiums from now on to play the newer games on , quake , doom , unreal , half life , carmageddon ,total annihilation , the settlers , starcraft , need for speed , test drive , motogp ,... .
Win95 , 98 , XP ( after windows XP i stoppped using torrents , Warez , edonkey , imesh ,... beqause of all the virusses ) i learned how to format C: a lot :) .
Win 7 ... here i managed to make dual boot and have tried and failed UBUNTU but i got lost WINE , TERMINAL copie codes where the hell are all the files ? Even uninstalling was a problem .
one does not just uninstall linux :)
Win 10pro and now windows 11pro and i really don't like it anymore .

My computers where always been used 80% gaming 20% browsing internet and using torrents . Recently I have bought new parts 2-3 weeks ago at my local computer store .

Pc specs are : Windows 11PRO
Corsair crystal X 570 full glass panels
PSU Cooler master 1250V2
CPU AMD ryzen 9 9950X + BE quiet dark rock elite
ASUS PRIME X870-P WIFI
DDR5-5600 Kingston 2X32 GB
Inno3D Nvidia 5080 and i have the first Valve index VR set .
C:/ windows 11 PRO : NVME Corsair MP700 ELITE 1 TB , 272 GB used and 658 GB free
E:/Data : NVME Lexar SSD NM790 4TB , 1.01 TB used 2.71 TB free
Samsung oddesy G7 LS28AG700N screen setup in Nvidia settings is 4K 144HZ . Display on screen setup is response time extreme , refresh rate 144Hz , adaptive sync off , low input lag off

I have been modding my games on windows since Carmageddon 2 , Vice city up and until GTA 4 , Fallout 3 , NV , fallout 4 and Cyberpunk , i mostly play single player games so i don't need to be scared about the anti cheat what troubles dual boot systems i have read .
i know mostly what i am doing on Windows ... format C: , downloading magnet links , modding manual , modding with vortex , tinkering/adjusting gamefiles , getting older games to work on newer versions of windows , dosbox ,...

What do i mostly play now ?
ONLINE :
Elite dangerous+VR and Beyond all reason ( BAR) , sometimes TFC2 , planetside , GTA5 , Raceroom , Ride 4 , Isle of man TT 1,2,3,... .
Mostly not intrested anymore in online gaming beqause too meany cheaters and i am getting too slow for online FPS games .

OFFLINE Single player:
Fallout series are vortex modded , Cyberpunk vortex modded , Civ 6 , RDR2 , most Doom games+Doom VR , all series Half life+VR mods , wolfenstein , Carmageddon 1 2 3 and reincarnation , dungeon keeper 1 and 2 , gruntmods Dune 2000 , Beyond all reason .

Amiga Emulator with most populair games and the games i still have on CD32 discs , alien breed , super skidmarks , worms , Lotus 1,2,3 and some aminet/goldfish cd's... i like to play them once in a while ( nostalgia ) ??? When is bitrot comming ? I keep those cd's locked out of sunlight ???

Can linux OS run this all with little or no problems now ?
Steam is no big problem i have read but what about non steam games like starcraft 1 and 2 , GTA dune 2000 ?
Will it be searching a lot to get most populair games working and there vortex mods i want , i already read vortex is not really supported but some mods are ?
i have seen comparisations of windows VS linux on you tube and some where not that good ? lower fps , manual tweaking , not realy working good allround ?

Also i don't know who to trust when i am wachting what distro's could be best for me .
i follow Gamers Nexus , JayzTwoCents , Paul's Hardware , Linus Tech Tips ( i know Linus not the best one but gave me idea's in his early years about overclocking and hardware ) .
But now ? Who do i follow when it comes to linux ? everyone will say there linux os is the best but in the comments section everyone will say something diffrent :(

The more i watch or read about LINUX the more questions i am having :/

I am now lost again and only for choosing the best OS for me ... maiby start again with UBUNTU ? or start with Mint , Bazzite , pop ,... i don't know anymore :/
i have downloaded Ubuntu.iso and Bazzite.iso for now , they are not installed yet , beqause maiby i need another OS ?

Maiby i can try on my previous pc : but first i gonna need to uninstall all games and programs on data disc beqause it's nearly full .
i do not even got a case for my previous pc , it lies unprotected on a few lego blocks on my desk now beqause i need to copy files to my new pc when i need them , i still need to find some file's for some games .

windows 10 Pro
intel core i7 8700K
Asrock Z370 extreme4
DDR4 32 GB 2X16GB
Nvidia 1080GTX

I hope i have given a good amount of information .

Sorry for my bad english and writing but i try to explain a lot and new questions keep coming in :/

Thank you for reading and i will be reading yours .

Friendly greetings RoelZXR

I have installed my previus ubuntu ssd in my old computer and is now updating to ubuntu 18.04 was lucky i found my password

Welcome aboard.

Also, you should probably be using a current and supported version of Ubuntu. 18.04 is long-since dead and unsupported, unless you've gone through the rigmarole to enable their 'pro' stuff, which will give you some additional support. Even then, that's probably at the end of its life, if not beyond the end of its life.

Ubuntu 18.04 reached it's end of life in May of 2023.

For gaming I would give Nobara a go as it is based on Fedora.

For everyday use Linux Mint works well for me and many other members here.

I've tested Steam and it worked well however I just didn't have a high enough GPU at the time of testing Warframe.
Linux Mint ran Steam very well and I had zero issues.

As far a Pop OS I'm pretty certain that it was specifically designed for System 76 systems.
I've seen folks install it on laptops over the years and the functionality wasn't what it could have been as there were either software or hardware issues.

Ubuntu 18.04 reached it's end of life in May of 2023.

If, and it's a big if, they've put effort into it, they can have support for a long time, longer than I initially thought when I wrote my comment.

They'll need the 'pro' stuff installed and configured, which is a bit of a task but not too hard. It's also free for up to 5 computers.

See this link:

In theory, they could go all the way to 2033 with Ubuntu 18.04. I strongly suspect they've not done that. So, it'll be EOL for them.

It is now updated and a new update is ready to go 20.04 suddenly .
Can't do no harm on an older pc with old ssd , it is just for trying out and exploring .

Here is a photo i took from my dual boot

Other thoughts:

If you have the game disk's you may be able to find an emulator that works with Linux however, after doing research I found that you'll have to build or configure a driver so that the emulator will work properly.

Our Moderator is good with gaming and gave me good advice on a gaming system I will be building in the not so distant future.
@f33dm3bits and @BigBadBeef @dos2unix may be able to advise with gaming.

Wish you the best.
Alex

Start with PikaOS or Nobara since you care about gaming it's better to have newer kernels and software which you have with both of those.

What advise is needed?
Inno3D Nvidia 5080 and i have the first Valve index VR set .
That 5080 will work fine on Linux as I'm using that, I have no experience with VR headsets but from I've read VR is still bad on Linux. But since it's created by Valve you might still have some luck with that one.

i guess i gonna reinstall ubuntu with the usb stick , can i completly format the dual boot and erase all partitions including the ubuntu i have now all in one go ? so i get full 500 GB free for ubuntu installation ?

@Roelzxr welcome to linux.org

Ubuntu 20.04 is also end of life, unsupported since April 2025.

You need to update to or install Ubuntu 22.04.

Thank you all for your information , i have made a bootable usb drive with the latest ubuntu installer to use on the 500 gb dual boot ssd 500 gb . I gonna start a new topic , from there i will continu my new adventure .

If, for some reason, you really like 20.04, you can go get a Pro subscription (free for five personal devices) and get legacy support all the way out to 2035.

I am not suggesting that you do so, but it is an option. It's not all that difficult to get going now. These days, you just install a Snap package and configure it. It was a bit more of a technical process when they first introduced it. Also, I'm petty sure that it was calld 'Advantage', but it's now called 'Pro'.

i am learning the basics in ubuntu for now , later i will but an official one but since there are so meany distro's i need to check what will be good and what not .
Thank you all for pointing me in the good direction and i see you in my other topic " getting started "

Thanks RoelZXR

Good afternoon linux users ,

Hi Reolzxr

I'm probably not much help to you as I'm not a gamer, although I do relax playing chess on Linux from time to time.

Very interesting post. I enjoyed reading. Linux Ugh! So many options out there. I think gaming is getting more popular on Linux these days, from what I've read, with steam and so on. Kudo's on escaping Microsoft!

I fix Win troubles for friends sometimes, getting oddball stuff to work for them like sound issues, drivers and so on. Every time, I get so frustrated, kinda like trying to do jumping jacks while being handcuffed, kinna thing.

As far as Linux flavors and distro's, I always recommend a Debian based Linux, if not just Debian. It's so well established keeping up with so much GPL software out there. But even that is just a personal choice.

It's fun running around free with so many choices, unlike you get with proprietary systems. The trade off is researching what best fits your personal preferences, and figuring out the vast learning curve that come with diving into Linux. Just my humble opinion though.

I remember so long ago as a dumb kid putting "red hat linux " on a old computer with a bunch of floppies. I got it installed but then sat there looking at a blinking command prompt chewing on my hair in deep thought, thinking what now? Linux has come a long ways since then! haha.

Hope you find the perfect distro for you! :)

I also need to help my father from time to time with his PC. He does not understand most things anymore on his PC, and he also needs his emails to check with me if they are real or not. a lot of phising mails nowadays .

Sometimes it's frustrating because he changes some settings, and I need to figure out what he did to break some programs or settings. He likes torrent websites for his movies ( you know what i mean ) Last time, he got a black background screen and was complaining that the background had changed. No worries, I changed it back to his trusty Windows background.

He used the Windows repair tool, and that changed some stuff and settings, so I needed to fix that again.

He also complains that he needs Windows 11 because Windows 10 is too old. I told him not to buy a new PC, and I went into BIOS to change some settings to perform a bit better. I also turned off a lot of features in Windows that he never needs. His PC now is idle at 2-3% instead of 15% or more. Even his RAM usage in idle was more than 5 GB now . I managed to get it down to 3 GB because of all the unnecessary bloat in his PC running in the background.

He still likes to game a bit too, but mostly simple games because his mind is full of holes now.

I help him as much as I can because he helped me when I was a kid and didn’t understand computers or the language back then.

I'm still trying to find the best distro for me. I have now installed Linux Mint, and this looks a bit more familiar. Sure, I need to learn it, and I know I am like a baby that's trying to run when I cannot even walk properly. :)
But i can manage it i installed a few games and the are all working again .
Linux is not that hard now , a few years earlier that was a diffrent experience .
I am glad Linux is much eazier now .

Greetz Roelzxr .

Windows 10 is too old.

He is correct. It is too old. It is no longer supported and will no longer get security updates, leaving it vulnerable to exploitation.

MSFT will let you pay to use Windows 10 for another year, which they might consider doing in the long-term if it's viable and profitable. Those people will get updates. Your father will not.

Hello @Roelzxr
Welcome to the Linux.org forum, enjoy!

I so relate! I lost my Dad to covid back in 2021. Before then, I took care of him for 10 years. He was so smart though! programming C and C++, java scripting, and so on. He was a mech engineer like me, but in different fields. His body was just giving out on him. He started becoming too trusting, and was so vulnerable to scams, and his email got way out of hand with it all. It was never ending, helping him get it under control. He was always boss though, and I was the so called muscles haha. He was a MS Windows guy and we had so much fun teasing each other as I was into Linux. I had him playing with Linux as dual boot. He liked it, but was too dug in with Windows. His short term memory was starting to fade, but even so, he always remained my hero. Wow do I miss him! Lost Mom a week before losing him. That was just as devastating! They lived 50 miles apart from each other, and I took care of her too. I don't know how i did it really with a full time job. I must have had superhuman strength or something, getting use to maybe 2 or three hours sleep a day. I was so freaking naive. I got so use to nursing them back to health I thought for sure they would live longer than me! They were both like only 16 years older than me. They helped me to plan retirement as early as possible and use to bicker back and forth about who would have me the most. 2021 was such a bad year! Staying retired is getting more difficult. The guys I worked with are not giving up trying to get me back on that horse!
