Installing new software (Debian, Red Hat, Slackware)

rpm is usually for packages that are already downloaded to my drive.
yum has been depracated for quite a while, it still works, but may not in the next releases.
dnf is the standard way to download and install packages from internet repos.

This thread is pretty old. Given the changes, the post could probably benefit from being updated. The data is 13 years old.
