In the tradition of things, I will give very circular routes to people who ask me for directions. This still happens in the GPS-era. When asked, I send people on a longer trip than they'd actually need.
It's not the best area to earn a good (financial) living. There are jobs, but not many great opportunities. It's a great place to live after you've earned your nest egg.

My Pop want's to go up there as soon as we can. He is retiring soon. Maine is where one of the last Good times where my mother was still alive and with us here. He wants to sell his auto shop and retire up there. I can't say I blame him.

We might go West Virginia, as we just love the mountains. I've never been there, though. Maine will always hold a little bit of memories for me.
West VA has some great scenery, depending on where you end up.
As for an automotive repair shop, that'd be a viable business here -- but your father may need to get used to working in the 'Rust Belt'. When it snows, we plow and put down salt to deal with the ice. Some areas use calcium chloride, but salt is cheaper and much more common. Some areas (not in my area) use beet juice mixed with salt, We don't really have a beet juice surplus here in Maine.
You can make a living in Maine, but it'll be hard. That's okay. There are many folks doing exactly that. A trade is probably your best bet, like an electrician or plumber. You probably don't want a job that has you working outdoors in the winter, unless you're okay with working in the cold. Most construction work stops during the winter, unless there's some internal work to keep them busy.
