That thing looks positively prehistoric, though quite a few birds do.

Last week, the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) began the pilot drill for the Million Year Ice Core Project (MYIC), a quest for the world's oldest continuous ice core.

Ice cores are an integral source of information for climate scientists because air bubbles trapped in the ice provide a record of the atmospheric composition at the time the ice was laid down. In the case of 3 km deep ice at Dome C in Antarctica—where the MYIC project drill is taking place—that can be more than 2 million years ago.

Hummm Two million year old rocks single malt scotch? :D

I forgot to mention this earlier, even though I'm streaming it.

The Bathurst 12 Hour is running. It's a great race, so far.

Hummm Two million year old rocks single malt scotch

Sassunach,, there are only 2 things you put in single malt, a tablespoon of room temperature water or another single malt ... NEVER contaminate it with ice, malt should always be served at room temperature in a 6 or 8 oz tumbler adding ice cools it down it stops the esters [the smell] and chills the pallet, so you do not get the full benefit of the drink, if you insist on ice drink Grain whisky or a cheap blend....

Mercedes nearly clears wall in horrifying Bathurst 12-hour crash

Yeah, it was pretty spectacular. A meter or so to the left and he'd have gone over the wall and taken the shortcut down to the bottom of the mountain! Fortunately, the wall pretty much prevents that and modern cars are absurdly safe when compared to the racing cars of our youth.

He was trying to do a kick-flip with his car but it's not a skateboard.

The in-car video showed him being quite composed but a bit angry. After an accident like that, it's common to take them to the hospital for a quick examination. There's often a helicopter on-scene just in case. Racing is quite safe these days.

Welcome to Australia,

Australia is enduring a dynamic mix of severe weather this week, with flooding rain in northern Australia, bushfires in southern Australia, heatwaves baking part of every state and territory, severe thunderstorms in several states, and two severe tropical cyclones spinning over Australian waters.

just a normal week then

Absolutely.

Australia is enduring a dynamic mix of severe weather this week, with flooding rain in northern Australia, bushfires in southern Australia, heatwaves baking part of every state and territory, severe thunderstorms in several states, and two severe tropical cyclones spinning over Australian waters.

All of those things have the potential to be Really Bad Days®. Stay safe!

In the past, I've sent a few bucks to help with fire recovery in AUS. This is a lot at once. Let's hope folks are safe and property damage is kept at a minimal. Last year, my state got rocked with massive flooding and storms that destroyed the infrastructure - three times in just two months. My point is, it can strike close to home. So, keep your head on a swivel and look out for your neighbors.

Sort of on the same topic, we actually had an earthquake and then a smaller one followed it a couple of days later. (That's common.) I actually felt the house shake way inland where I was. There was no serious damage and it's only notable because I live in a 'geographically stable' area. My area was shaped by glaciers and the tectonic plate we're on is large - and I'm nowhere near the edge of said zone.

But, again, stay safe. Your biggest safety tool is the one you were born with. You can even use that tool to help your community if it is needed.

I actually knew quite a bit of this, having been properly informed on the matter.

Most folks will have never had the chance to taste this Vegemite stuff. I've actually seen it on the shelf at a nearby grocery store. Considering how remote I am, that's saying something. The trucks that deliver the groceries literally turn back in the village and head back to civilization. However, it was at a store a little more urban than that store, still rather remote however.
