An odd quirk of Devuan and KDE for me

Let me start by saying I'm not asking for the solution, I'm asking how to find the solution. I don't know where to begin looking.

Installed Devuan 6 with KDE desktop. Using Synaptic or < apt install chromium > it pulls all the dependencies and loads right up fine. When I open Chromium I see the normal start page window and that's as far as it goes. It doesn't open full screen, but more like the middle third of my desktop- taller than it is wide. When I mouse over anything, (menu bar, tab bar, settings menu, window corner grab handles) it's all grayed out and nothing works. Can't X close the window, can't open the default tab bar links, can't resize the window, can't drag the window to a different spot, right clicking the settings menu shows the entire drop down list, but it's all dimmed gray. The only way to close the window is with the X in the taskbar.

My test box: Dell Optiplex, i7, 16G RAM, embedded graphics. A fresh install of Devuan + KDE has Chromium working as expected on the test box.

My main box: Dell Precision, i9, 128G RAM, 6G graphics, with the four swappable drive bays in the front. First NVMe drive is Debian, my daily driver. Second NVMe drive is my hold-out Windows 10 for a handful of programs that can't cross over to Linux(CAD/CAM, scanner programming, Kenwood radio programming). First SATA drive is Windows 11; I needed it to learn Win11 for family member support. Second SATA drive is where I do long term testing after I learn the setups of whatever I distro hop on the other test box. I do the long term testing where I try and break the OS or programs so I can learn how to correct it. It works well for me. I call it my coal-fired machine.

Loading Devuan + KDE on the Precision long term test drive is where I found the quirk I described above with the grayed out Chromium window. Only in KDE though. When I wiped/reloaded Devuan with either Gnome or Cinnamon, Chromium works as expected. Same install medium and same package install on both the separate test machine and the main machine test drive. And it's only the Chromium window that I have found acting weird. I've tried installing the full KDE from the initial tasksel installation menus, and also <apt install kde-plasma-desktop> on a terminal only Devuan.

I've been a long time Gnome user but I'm starting to like the extra customization KDE has so I thought I'd switch. Where the heck do I even begin to look for what could be causing this oddity? It has me scratching my head. My Google-fu hasn't been much help.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

I dunno. Chromium runs fine in KDE for me, on Debian. I've never tried Devuan, though, so I got nothin'. I only replied so you know someone is looking at the thread.

I think I might have to admit defeat on this. I spent too much time yesterday trying many different setup configurations and getting nowhere. Kind of frustrating, but I can stay with Gnome.

it might be an issue with the package or the engine or like maybe the dependancys. i recommend uninstalling it and building it from scratch. if that dont work then try running chromium via the terminal. by doing that you can see the logs and see what is even going on. have a great day
