Privacy on this site

Hey there everyone..

We had a long Labor Day weekend so I tried to spend some time away from the computer - apologize for my delay in replying to this post.

We require input of "birth date" to help verify age of our members for registration. The cut off is that you need to be 13yrs or older to register. This adds another hoop for would-be spammers to have to fill out upon registration - not just the data they provide, but the timing it takes to enter it.. ie: if they enter the info on the registration page in under 10 seconds (I forget the actual time) or so, it flags them as a bot and disallows registration.

After that, as with any Internet site, you can modify the display of your information - we think it's pretty easy to find the settings:

Top/right of site, mouse-over your username to get a dropdown - click 'privacy'.
It will bring you here: https://www.linux.org/account/privacy

Then, pick what to show/hide.

We don't do anything with any of the data on the site - that's why we continue to have advertisements, etc.. to help pay for the operation of the site.

We also urge our users to make use of the two-step verification on your account - this insures that only you are signing in under your account. You can also pick that option from the dropdown mentioned earlier - or follow this link: Two-Step Verification

Thanks!
Rob

I should really get off my bum and learn some more about this site. I didn't know some of that, Thanks Rob :)

Another millennium and I should start to get the hang of this computer stuff  (grumble grumble A Wizard's work is never done)

I didnt know some of that (Wiz) Ditto here.......which should tell Rob that a great deal of info which should be simple to see....Is not.

1 millennium for you mate, probably 10 times that for me.

probably not the biggest deal in the world for most of us.....but just picture some poor hapless character who has no clue whatsoever in the mechanics etc of a forum, and what he/she should look for and be aware of etc etc ad infinitum......and sometime down the track he discovers he has had his 'identity' lifted courtesy of, in part, available info at linux.org

Am i exaggerating somewhat ?

Or have I nailed it.

I put a "like" on that Brian but (you know Wizard's but is always lurking nearby :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:)

Am i exaggerating somewhat ?

Not particularly

Or have I nailed it.

I don't think quite so ... the Jury is out for the obligatory cup of tea.

...in part, available info at linux.org

The only information there is what we choose to put there.

At the place where you and I came from ... that which shall not be named ... I used to have that I lived in a wonderful spot in south-east Queensland, might have even said my wife's name.

If I start to put my street address, my email URL &c, I may as well add my bank account details and ask for donations, then go online and find the coffers are empty.

Extreme, yes, but this site cannot be expected to cover all contingencies, particularly with some of us (myself included) whom are mentally challenged, and/or young and inexperienced and trusting.

There just aren't the resources. Yet.

What does @Rob think of us starting a fundraiser to make the site more secure (within reason) with more sophisticated software? And I've received a couple of days ago my linux.org stickers (https://www.linux.org/threads/linux-org-laptop-stickers.18881/), whether Rob has those (perhaps meagre) funds targeted I do not know.

Which raises the question of the Human Resources we need to implement same software?

I am brainstorming here, and seemingly hijacking James' Thread - perhaps a separate Thread in an appropriate venue might be better.

Later folks, got Spammers to Hammer
