Sadly the "early 1979" Oldsmobile diesel (which mine was) was a converted 350 CID gasoline engine. The later 1979 diesel engines were actually build as diesels - My dad had one of those in a big station wagon ("Custom Cruiser", I think) and got about 250 thousand miles on it, which was unheard of for an American made car in those days. I replaced (what was left of) my diesel engine with a gasoline powered 350 but I kept the oversized starter and alternator and dual batteries and drove the car for a couple more years.A neighbour of mine has exactly that Chevy Silverado pickup with 5.7L V8, but it's gasoline, not diesel. When I hear the gurgling of that gasoline V8, I forget my name. It does a better job at wakin' me up than the alarm clock on my smartphone.![]()
