I've been a 'nixer for years and never knew about this site, but I'm glad I found it! I've "lurked" long enough to know it's safe, friendly place for learner (padawans, hence the name - "always a learner") like me or masters like many of you.
I worry a little about the Four Freedoms (GNU / FLOSS) being lost to Big Money, Big Tech, and taking "the quick and easy path" to quote Master Yoda, which makes people more and more dependent on them. People - even little ordinary desktop users - should always be free to play with software, break it and fix it (and learn), use it any way they wish, fold it, mold it, sculpt it, share it, whatever. That's the beauty of the GNU licensing.
I've recently returned from a brief but very satisfying fling with FreeBSD (in the form of GhostBSD, which is kinda like what Ubuntu did for millions of Linux beginners - GhostBSD is doing for FreeBSD users). They are very different in many ways, but enough alike for an old 'nixer to feel pretty comfortable. I'm back on Linux for now for reasons of:

- Portability
- Hardware compatibility
- Gooeyness (GUI, I'm still scared of the dreaded ▄︻デT̷e̷r̷m̷i̷n̷a̷l̷══━一)
- Performance
- Confident sharing with family, friends, and peers (other padawans).
