I've been a 'nixer for years and never knew about this site, but I'm glad I found it! I've "lurked" long enough to know it's safe, friendly place for learner (padawans, hence the name - "always a learner") like me or masters like many of you.

I worry a little about the Four Freedoms (GNU / FLOSS) being lost to Big Money, Big Tech, and taking "the quick and easy path" to quote Master Yoda, which makes people more and more dependent on them. People - even little ordinary desktop users - should always be free to play with software, break it and fix it (and learn), use it any way they wish, fold it, mold it, sculpt it, share it, whatever. That's the beauty of the GNU licensing.

I've recently returned from a brief but very satisfying fling with FreeBSD (in the form of GhostBSD, which is kinda like what Ubuntu did for millions of Linux beginners - GhostBSD is doing for FreeBSD users). They are very different in many ways, but enough alike for an old 'nixer to feel pretty comfortable. I'm back on Linux for now for reasons of:
  • Portability
  • Hardware compatibility
  • Gooeyness (GUI, I'm still scared of the dreaded ▄︻デT̷e̷r̷m̷i̷n̷a̷l̷══━一)
  • Performance
  • Confident sharing with family, friends, and peers (other padawans).
It's been a fun journey! But I'm far from becoming a Knight yet, much less a Master.

“A Jedi’s strength flows from the Terminal.”

“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

“Control, control—you must learn control!”

“Afraid you will be … you will be.”

“For my ally is the Terminal, and a powerful ally it is.”

“To a dark place this line of thought will carry us. Hmmm. Great care we must take.”

Oh crap, I thought you said "Goofiness"

The terminal is a powerful "secret weapon," to be sure! I used it a lot in my recent fling with FreeBSD! But I misspelled stuff a lot, mashing two keys at once or something. Error: no such command and Error: Requires ghurtp987.ds to execute and that kind of stuff. I'm like, "what the heck is that gobbledygook and what am I supposed to do about it?"

I like it gooey and I'm not ashamed to say so!

Thanks for your awesome reply!

@Perpetual Padawan , you are a day my senior, so perhaps I should refer to you as Sifu?

I've been using Linux since 2010 and exclusively since 2014. Run 85 of the suckers, so I must like it.

Welcome and enjoy.

And it's Friday in Oz so Avagudweegend

@Perpetual Padawan :-

Welcome to Linux.org!

I've been a 'nixer for years and never knew about this site, but I'm glad I found it! I've "lurked" long enough to know it's safe, friendly place for learner (padawans, hence the name - "always a learner") like me or masters like many of you.

Heh. Trust me, mate, there's no such thing as a "Linux master". We're ALL 'learners' here; some with perhaps many years more experience than others, but there's always summat new to have to wrap your head around.

The whole idea of ANY site like ours is to share knowledge.....not to jealously "hoard" it. You're in GOOD company, trust me; even our veterans admit they learn something new most days!

Enjoy....

Mike. ;)

Welcome. It's good to see someone who lurked before they posted. I visited and read threads for a couple of days before jumping in. I didn't lurk long, as there were some questions that didn't have responses.
