Hi,
I last installed Ubuntu or any OS maybe 20 years ago so I'm not up to date at a all.
I have aquired and old Windows 10 box and would like to install Ubuntu / Mint.

Unfortunately this PC does not have Wifi so I'm looking for a Wifi dongle that would be compatable.

Google did suggest

but unfortunately I cant find this item in the UK

Any suggestions on other dongles that work out of the box allowing me to install ubuntu / mint.

Thanks

Alfa card is golden standard for me, I have them 2 and using them for some 7 years, currently using one of them.

Suggested models:

I don't currently need new one but if I do I'd buy this one:

Welcome to the forums [from a kentish man in exile]
I have several of these they work well and being small you're not likely to catch them and damage either the dongle or your laptop

This one works (I used it on Debian and various distros):

The only issue is can TP-Link be trusted?
Damn me. Yours still works?

I bought one of these, um.....Christ on a bike. Let me think; 2013? No; must have been 2012, I guess, 'cos I ran it with XP for around a year & a half before that hit EOL and I finally kicked it into touch.

Early v1s used a MediaTek chipset, which was a flat bust under Linux. I started off with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, the "Trusty Tahr". This used the k3.13 kernel.

To start with, wi-fi was a no-no with the TL-WN725N. I got so's I just left it permanently plugged-in and kept trying it from time to time. Around late August, at the time of update from 14.04.2 to 14.04.3 - the second 'point release' - the thing just suddenly started working, as though it had always been capable.

Mine was a v2, which ran a Realtek chipset. i found out that the r8188eu chipset driver was now supported, so despite having Ethernet I used to play around with it from time to time.

I still have it, even now. It ran great 10 years ago.....but it refuses to connect at all now. Planned obsolescence, perhaps..?

The 'big' Pavilion has a wifi/Bluetooth combo chip. Don't use it very often, but it's fine on the occasions when I do.

The E6430 Lat in the front room uses Centrino.....and that's nae trouble at all.

I have two or three of them but I haven't used them in a few months or so because I primarily use laptops which don't require a wifi dongle. But yea I think they started being supported since Debian 12 out of the box. I haven't had any issues with any TP-Link products I have bought so far.

I'd recommend looking at the links in my signature - they're quite informative
