Thanks to Rob's recent Linux.org article, which reintroduced me to Slashdot, I just read about a utility I was completely unaware of even after years of using Mint Xfce. Panel-Profiles allows you to quickly try some pre-built templates made to look like other desktops you (or your reluctant victim) might be more familiar with. It also allows you to back up your current config and safely restore it--I just tested this myself.
edit: (I hit post too quick) I searched the site for any reference to this utility before posting. If this is old knowledge please disregard. This isn't something that I'll be using much myself as I'm happy with the standard layout with a few tweaks, but this might be something that helps someone like my wife get over her fear and loathing of losing her Windows desktop.
