WiFi keeps disconnecting

I have a spare 2m cat 6 cable I sometimes plug into my Laptop to get the same download speed as my Tower.

I have a cat 6 cable here I use from time to time also has always worked well.

The cable arrived, I hooked it up and so far it seems to be working great (Me; rapping on nearest tree...).

Thanks again for the help. I can't believe I didn't think of this myself!

that is because most people look only at what they have in front of them, They don't often look at the other options. It is called tunnel vision and we all suffer from it at times.

Glad it's working for you :)

Now this may be an update problem, because when I installed Linux and updated, it spent hours downloading the over a hundred updates without disconnecting once (the .iso file is at least three months old). However the same updates have also been installed on my laptop, albeit not all at once, and as I pointed out earlier, it's fine.

Has anyone else encountered this? Can I fix it or do I need to completely reinstall Linux?
Since Windows 7 works fine on the same hardware, this does sound more like a Linux driver, power management, or kernel issue than a hardware fault. Before considering a reinstall, I'd check whether WiFi power saving is being enabled automatically, as that can cause the exact behavior you're describing.

You might also want to look at the system logs right after the disconnect occurs (dmesg or journalctl) and identify the exact wireless chipset in use. Sometimes a recent kernel update can introduce compatibility issues for specific adapters. If your laptop uses the same Linux version but different WiFi hardware, that could explain why only the desktop is affected.
