You do not have to go overboard with an ethernet cable. as long as it has 8 wires in it and is not a cross over cable (which is special order) then it is fine. You are over thinking this. Also the ISP modem (the device they give you to communicate) is not operating system dependent nor is the router.

I have a spare 2m cat 6 cable I sometimes plug into my Laptop to get the same download speed as my Tower.

I have a cat 6 cable here I use from time to time also has always worked well.

The cable arrived, I hooked it up and so far it seems to be working great (Me; rapping on nearest tree...).

that is because most people look only at what they have in front of them, They don't often look at the other options. It is called tunnel vision and we all suffer from it at times.
