I put this in Ubuntu, 'cause I haven't actually tested every distro - and I believe some distros (like the RHEL family) do it a bit differently. I probably could have tested that, but I'd need to do some virtualization and I didn't really want to go through all that. So, while .local may work for you, I have no confidence outside of the Ubuntu official flavors.
