Splintered Thread from___Drive Failure Imminent_"Last Option"

@wizardfromoz

After getting all of this, I'm not sure what exactly you asked for!
I looked up what to put in the terminal. I found a lot of commands. I wasn't positive which one would give me the information you wanted
I put all of this in the thread so that
  1. I can go back to this if I need to. I can't save anything to the desk top, but I can bookmark this post!
  2. You can look at it if you need to.

Okay, I'm turning off Last Option. Getting to the CMOS battery looks easy enough.

I'll be on my tablet if I get stuck. Wish me luck!

THAT is why I did not recognise them.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145-15AST

Thanks for that.

If you need it, The Hardware Maintenance Manual is here as a PDF

https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/s145_series_hmm_201902.pdf

It may help in getting the screws out.

...oops

If/when you have reseated the CMOS battery and in so doing got rid of the password on BIOS, can you please provide a fresh screenshot of what Disks reveals about Last Option?

A few of us have a concern that in your previous screenshot, the 1 TB drive, as well as reporting a hugely inaccurate drive size, was also identifying it as /dev/sdb where it should be /dev/sda.

So if we can get that screenshot, that may assist.

TIA

Wizard

Didn't work. Disconnecting the CMOS battery didn't help. It didn't reset the password. No HDD shows at all now. I remembered something though. If the time in BIOS isn't right, a lot of things won't work.

I'm going to have to look around the internet to figure out how to change that password.

OK, someone else may have ideas.

Good luck, and Nite :)

@wizardfromoz

I found some interesting information about this Lenovo. It looks like the hard drive itself is password protected. There also seems to be a master password to get into BIOS set by Lenovo. That makes a lot more sense to me. My ex would never even think about something like that.

I sent the links for the manual and the info I found to myself in an email. I'm going to look more at this tomorrow.

The answer may be in the manual Chris provided, on page 23 below. Worst case is Lenovo telling you to replace the drive if you can't remember or guess the password(s). Cheaper than replacing the laptop, I guess, but not a "happy ending" either, if you make that decision. But you are a tinkerer (you have tools!) so perhaps you have a spare SSD handy or can scrounge another drive elsewhere.

OMG. It looks like everything I need is actually on the Lenovo website...
I'm not sure I trust this....

How to reset UEFI without XCC access
You're right, don't trust that to help you.

From your link:
You can use Lenovo XClarity Essentials Bootable Media Creator (hereinafter referred to as BoMC) to create bootable media suitable .... <snip> .... on supported ThinkSystem, System x, BladeCenter systems, and storage platforms.
Your laptop is not one of those supported systems. I don't see any hope there. :(

I glanced through that part last night. I remembered most of his easy to guess password. I just have to figure out the zipcode. There's not many to choose from.

Sherri's laptop (IdeaPad S145-15AST) is not as similar to my laptop as I'd hoped. Mine is an IdeaPad Slim 1-14AST-05, and my manual does not have any password information like that shown above. My UEFI settings do allow for admin and user passwords to be set, but there is no mention specifically of a "hard disk password" or any reference to a master password.

My laptop is a bottom-of-the-line model. I call it a "cheaptop" for good reason, it was only $120 brand new. But the RAM and storage drive are both soldered on the motherboard... they can't be replaced or upgraded. RAM is 4 GB which is okay, but the internal storage is only 64 GB (eMMC, not SSD). Runs Linux just fine.

I have a drive from an old Laptop with Vista on it. 2009 I think. Unless the password to get into BIOS is stored on the hardrive, I still can't get in.

It's all about money. eMMC is like an SD card for storage. It works, and it's a bit faster than a spinning hard drive, but not as good as SSD.

You'll have to open your case up again to check if that Vista drive will fit. Vista is pretty old... much older than your laptop.

hint......I have a spare hammer here

I think I'd rather put all this time and effort into my ASUS. I'm getting my first paycheck soon. I just need a capacitor for the graphics card... I think.
