Greetings all. I am trying to connect my Brother DCP-1510 printer to my HP Laptop. The printer currently works via a USB connection between the printer and my PC. I have a working Ethernet (and wireless if I want) connection between my modem and the laptop and also between my modem and my PC. After a fiddle I did manage to download a driver for the printer but now cannot find where it is or remember how I did it. Then I went via the network path (I think this is where I found the driver) but it defaulted to Generic-CUPS... printer as per my diagram. I don't think that any of this is right as I don't have a 'network' setup between my PC and the laptop. Maybe I need to set one up before I can use the printer? The printer connects to my PC via a USB cable. Maybe I should get a one in, two out USB (I think that there is such a thing) so my laptop can see the printer? Below are my Linux laptop details and a diagram of my Laptop/PC/Modem/Printer connections for your enjoyment. Thoughts, suggestions much appreciated. Cheers.

If it were me, I would connect the printer direct to the router via USB [most routers have at least one USB socket] and the computers by either wired or Wi-Fi networking [or hybrid also should work]

Oh I see. I never noticed that my Modem/router has a USB slot. So I would connect the printer to the router USB slot then both my PC and Laptop should see the printer via the ethernet connection. That would be simple and great if it works this way. Cheers

Sadly the printer direct to the router via USB approach didn't work. Probably a multitude of things happening between the router and the two computers. Tried the troubleshooter for the printer which just took me to a Chinese website that showed me pictures of how to fill the printer tray. Oh well.

specs for that printer indicate that its only interface is USB 2.0 - it has no networking capability. best solution would be to centrally locate the printer and connect it to one of these --> https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Selector-Computers-Peripheral-One-Button/dp/B01MXXQKGM and then connect the desktop to that - then use the switcher when you want to print from the laptop.

alternately, purchase a printer that has networking capabilities (wifi or ethernet) and read this --> https://opensource.com/article/21/8/share-printer-cups

thanks. Yes. I ended up with the same idea after a little googling. Cheers
