One thing to be aware of when running a "live" distro from a thumb drive, is that it will take longer (much longer) to load from the thumb drive media than from a hard drive, so you will need to be patient. Give it a while before assuming that something went wrong, get a cup of coffee or 2. Welcome to the forum, you are in good company.:)
Shouldn't be that long for my mac to be back in order after sleep mode or turn display off mode right?
I reckon it's to be expected bc the OS not in the device huh?

As alluded to above, and to expand upon it:

USB devices transfer data at lower speeds. Plus, in a 'live' system, you're loading even more data. A live system is loading the entire OS into RAM.

Once it's up and running, open applications should run fairly well, and they should be fairly responsive. Opening a new application will take longer than normal because it's loading from the USB. And, as mentioned, USB transfer speeds aren't that high. Given the age of your device, you're likely using USB 2.0, which has a theoretical maximum throughput of 480 Mbps. (You'll seldom see those peak numbers, meaning real-world results will be even slower.)
