I have been using Mint (Mate, XFCE) for about 2 years. At the same time, on another machine, I periodically try different distributions, mostly Debian-based:
debian (Gnome, XFCE)
Ubuntu (Gnome, XFCE, LMDE)
Kali XFCE
Fedora KDE, Gnome
neptune (don't remember)
In the past about 20 years Windows user (95, 98, XP, 7, 10)
Switching to Linux is not an easy thing to do and I think Mint was the right choice.
I have a computer based on Ubuntu - a lot of information is available online, I will have to use a terminal anyway. I immediately downloaded a tutorial on Ubuntu.
Mate DE seems very familiar, visually close to Win7 or something like that, almost all settings can be done from the graphical interface, but sometimes it is faster to use the terminal (this is realized later).

The update manager is very convenient - I have not seen it in other distributions.
In general, the graphical interface is well balanced.
Briefly about other distributions:
Debian is good, reliable, lightweight, but probably for those who have come a long way, realized Zen and returned to the roots.
Ubuntu - maybe, but not after Mint.
Kali is a tool for security experts, if you are not involved in networks, then there is nothing interesting there...
Neptune - I'll just say, take Debian instead.
Fedora - I liked it very much, maybe I'll come back someday, but you need to understand that this is a different branch and there are certain differences,
in particular, the work of the processor and memory, other software, etc.
my rating of DE:
1. XFCE - universal, lightweight, flexible.
2. Mate - best for sart
3. KDE (used for one day - too heavy for my machine)
4. Gnome - in my opinion, a good solution for touchscreen.
