I'm setting up LMDE 6 on my computer. However, I am unable to get my Canon MX490 network printer to work. It has been a while since I have used Linux. And this is the second time that I have tried to set up Linux since I got this printer. I have currently deleted the printer so that I can get a fresh install.

You mentioned that you deleted the printer.
Was it already working under LMDE6?

Try plugging in your Cannon and go to Settings> Hardware> Printers and add your printer.

If that fails----
The Cannon Pixma MX490 Drivers for Linux is on this page in the link below.

Both drivers (the printer 5.14.68 kb and scanner 236.17 kb) are there.
I would download the drivers for Debian.

I downloaded the driver for the printer to have a look at it.
You'll have to untar it. Once you untar the driver it will be in a folder marked cnijfilter.

Inside of that cnijfilter folder is a install.sh script.

Right click on that install.sh script and go to properties, then permissions and make sure it is set to 'allow executing file as a program'.

Run the script to install the driver.

Follow the same steps to install the driver for the scanner if it has one.

Oops! I've got a BIG problem with this solution. The printer is a Canon MX490 NETWORK printer. The ONLY two possible connections are by USB or WIRELESS. I'm sorry if I am yelling, but I have been banging my head with this problem for over a week now. I can get the printer connected and printing using Alexzee's solution IF and only if the printer is connected to the computer directly using a USB cable. This solution will not work because the printer has to be directly connected to the computer and the computer is left on 24/7. Thus the reason the need for a NETWORK printer.

The only other option is wireless, which I have been unable to do using Linux. And it does not matter which distro I am using. If I can't get this solved, I might as well go back to Windows [which I am very reluctant to do.

What I can do is send the printjob to the print que and then it gets stuck there. Help????

to set up a wireless printer in linux, usual routeen is

switch on wi-fi on the printer , locate and write down the passcode
click on the connections icon on your desk top open wi-fi and refresh
look [and hopefully find] your printer, highlight and connect,
when asked input the printer passcode
you will need to change the wi-fi connection between your router and the printer depending on use,
 
It was my experience with my HP Envy wireless printer that I had to set it up on the CUPS website.
There you can delete your printer and perform other maintenance and admin tasks.

The CUPS site may have been taken off line for maintenance. When I tried going there with FF and the Pale Moon browser and both times the connection to the server could not be established:-

To find out the uri for the printer I ran:

Yours will probably be something like: cannon-makeuri

I also had to find out the ppd file as well and set that.

And, through CUPS I was able to find the driver for it as well. You may have to do that also.
 
I'm from Australia, but I just went to the CUPS website, and set up my printer on a LInux Distro that I had not done so with, added the ppd, and printed fine.

Went to the CUPS website and it's up and running now.
IF I had to guess they must have taken the server offline last night for administrative tasks.

I ask you one favor. Take me by the hand and show me what I need to do (with examples if needed). Because of some other stuff going on in my life, I'm on the verge of a mental breakdown. 1. Go to your printer and look through the menu list and find what the printer's ip address is.
Once you know that ip address follow step 2.

2. Open your terminal in your LMDE6 installation and run this cmd (without the brackets)and post what it returns.

Did you delete the Printer from the Cups website?

Run this and post the output please. It will show the printers URI if it uses that protocol.

The output is "cnijnetprn: command not found." I have already deleted all printers in my Print Settings, even Boomaga. My printer is about four years old and works great with Windows. It seems that the command library in my terminal is speaking a different language than what it should be. Could that be a cause for things not working right?

That should be

canon-makeuri

Not sure if that helps.

EDIT: No, it won't. So scratch that. @Alexzee - Alex, the makeuri package is available only to HP, does not work for other printers. Sorry

I'll reboot to LMDE6 and see if I can glean anything.

There should still be a way to find the printers URI and the ppd.

I didn't know until our moderator @wizardfromoz informed me that command only works for HP.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

This command should show the backend name and the uri for the printer.

Installed PPD's are in /etc/cups/ppd, so you should find it there if you installed the printer with it.

In Debian it's /usr/share/ppd however, mine is blank as I don't have a printer installed.

If you didn't delete the printer in CUPS the ppd should show using this command:

find /usr -name '*.ppd'

When you have time Angelsong5 post the output of the command in post #19 and run this command above as well.
