I just bought an Epson XP-4200 printer scanner. I went to the Epson website to get the Linux driver for it. It's there, at least the link for it is but when I click "download" It just opens another page filled with gobbledygook. No download. The printer does run on Linux's generic driver, but not all features are available (like 2 sided printing). Help!

You

you are using mint, it already carries the Epsom XP driver sets in the software manager

You need to place a tick here...I Agree

to download the Drivers.
Download both Printer and Scanner Drivers and install them first...then connect the Printer...if you do it the other way around ..you'll just get blank pages and the Scanner won't work.

That gobbledygook is the driver - it is just expanded .deb file in Firefox and is not downloading the file correctly

Go to the top of Browser click on File then select "Save Page As" it should say "epson-printer-utility_1.2.3-1_amd64.deb"
now save the file, now you can install it - open a terminal where you stored it and run

sudo install ./epson-printer-utility_1.2.3-1_amd64.deb

The other option is to use a Chromium based browser to download the actual .deb file it is a Firefox bug caused by Epson website I think it is because the Epson server reports it to Firefox as context-type "text/plain"

This may give some insight to what is happening

As I said...once both Drivers are installed...connect your Printer.
Then go to the Software Manager if using Mint and install your Scanner or Scanners...
