New Mini PC - Installed Linux Mint Cinnamon - Kernel Disaster

Hi All-

I have been using Linux Mint for about 5 years now. I recently purchased a mini PC and proceeded to install the latest version of Linux Mint. Now when I boot up, I get to the desktop and about a minute into it everything freezes. If I try to open an application for the first time, my screen turns purple with the Kernel Panic error fatal exception in interrupt error. I can't get past this and its a nightmare.

The only difference this time is I am using an AMD CPU. Here are the specs: Ryzen 7 8745HS cpu780m integrated graphics16gb DDR5 RAM1TB m.2 NVMe SSD. I did the memtest86+ and it passed. I tried to download Ubuntu instead but now I cant copy over to the USB boot (stops at 65%).

Any tips please??

Mint stays well behind the leading edge. It's possible that your new and shiny mini PC with the Ryzen CPU needs a later kernel than the default kernel in Mint. I haven't used Mint in so many years I can't say for sure, however. I'm also far out of the loop on Ubuntu. Debian Unstable, aka Sid, might work, the current kernel for it is 7.1.4. The current for Mint is, AFAIK, 6.something. I don't know the kernel version your CPU requires, perhaps the manufacturer's website could provide that, providing there is one.

Thank you for the tips. I did download and install the latest kernel. (7.1). I am trying to do a fresh re install and it either ignores the boot order with USB in the 1st slot or when I get to that menu with the 4 options, I can't find the option to install??? It will just load up mint with the current install and back to the freeze up problem. Here's what I'm working with, do you see any potential issues?

I'm not sure I understand "ignores the boot order with the USB in the 1st slot". If you want to do a fresh install, you have to boot from the USB drive with the install .iso. How are you trying to do that? I don't know the keypress needed to do that on your machine, it varies by manufacturer, and I don't know the manufacturer. Your photos are mostly unreadable. It's usually an F key, but not always. I have no clue about "that menu with the 4 options". I'm not a minty guy, and I'm not familiar with the Mint installer. You need to provide more detailed information about what you're doing, and how. Perhaps someone with more experience with Mint will be along. It's supposed to be the easiest distro to install and run, but I can neither confirm nor deny that.

Yeah that last photo was bad! I will give better detail. Like I said, I have loaded LM on every computer in the house without any issues. This one is wacky. I will try to give you more clear information. I just appreciate the response from you all. Thank you!

I ran dmesg and then it got real toward the end after is suggested fsck!

This is what I do to install Linux Mint Cinnamon and xfce...

1. Download and verify the ISO.
2. Drag the ISO tnto my Ventoy Flash Drive.
3. Boot to the Ventoy Flash Drive tapping the correct Key
4. Boot to Mint and install.

I suggest you start again...if you have problems with Cinnamon..try xfce.

Kernel Panic is usually a hardware problem..xfce requires less system resources...so it's worth a try.

I just installed xfce so my mind was going in the right place! I used the USB boot disk utility on another Linux and now it's sees it. I needed to start over (erase disk and fresh install of xfce) and or looked as though OEM installation was the only option so I did it. Was working ok and then during installing the manh updates , I got the kernel fatal error again. So.. reboot and now it's updated. Not freezing up when I leave alone for now.

I have Mint xfce 22.1 running on my 14 year old Laptop because it has only 4GB of Ram and a slow CPU.

I have Cinnamon 22.1 running in my Tower that has 16GB of Ram...Motherboard...RAM and CPU are only 3 years old and UEFI only.
Ventoy is the best thing to use these days...works great and never fails...I have 10 ISOs on mine.

Ventoy is a real game-changer. It not only holds as many .iso files as will fit, but also any other files of any type, just like any other USB drive. I carry a tiny SanDisk Cruzer on my keychain with both live and netinst .iso files, as well as an encrypted Veracrypt container with important files I may need. I can add any others from any computer if necessary. Ventoy is da bomb.

Didn't know about ventoy but what a great way to test drive distros! My mini has 16 GBs so it should handle Mint cinnamon easily. Its weird. oh well, xfce seems to be working ok. Although it does weird crap if I leave it idle for a while . Like these tiny artifacts on the screen that disappear when I jiggle the mouse to wake up? ???

This is mine...

Some beginners may find the Linux way to install Ventoy a little hard...if you have a windoze VM...you can download the windoze version and install it on that.

This is the windoze version I created in my w7 VM...

As you can see...it works just fine in Linux...I tried it.
