Greetings all,
I haven't posted my rig setup. Just a bit about my Kernel adventures/outcomes and some basic associated questions
I have attempted a number of times to get 6.17.0-14 working on my 2016-ish desktop computer without success. When using the update manager it breaks my system – doesn’t work, won’t load properly on reboot, Grub doesn’t work with lots of Initramfs and other errors. I suspect the culprit is my ancient GeForce GTX 960 video card and/or Nvidia drivers for my three connected monitors and/or 6.17.0-14 just no longer likes my old rig.
6.14.0-37 kernel works just fine but is only supported until Feb 2026.
I have now reverted to 6.8.0-100 (supported until April 2029), nano fiddled with Grub that I can actually see it on Boot and selected 6.8.0-100 on Boot.
I have stopped distro hopping, dual and multi booting and I now bare metal (full clean install) Linux Mint 22.3 on one internal SSD. All my data is on separate HDDs.
So, my queries are.
1. I assume that it is OK to keep using (and only keep using until an updated kernel comes along that doesn't break my system), 6.8.0-100 with its long term support until at least April 2029?
2. Is it possible to select a particular kernel for a bare metal full install of Linux Mint? If so, how? Currently, I cannot install the latest Mint version I downloaded because it must be trying to install with the 6.17.0-14 kernel.
Thank you knowledgeable ones.
Cheers
John
