After installing 22.2 on a desktop and a laptop, only the desktop has had a problem with the screen randomly shutting down, that is black screen & no visible mouse cursor; the mouse does nothing when clicking on it.

The device randomly shuts the screen down and then resumes to the current working session. The length of time varies when the screen shuts down before resuming. The most was 3 minutes or so. This is not the same as shutting down the whole device and then rebootting. The screen shuts down and then resumes.

Mint 22.1 was installed on the same desktop but there was no such problem of screen shutting down. Ended up using Mint 22.1 but the desktop should have 22.2 as suggested.

Went through Mint 22.2 Driver Manager for the desktop to load any new drivers but it was checked and no new drivers.

Power settings are the same for 22.1 and 22.2, but 22.2 has had problems with the screen.

Searched the internet but nothing was said about such problem, so nothing can be done.

Is this a bug?

When a new version of Mint comes out (22.2) sometimes it may have bugs...this has been the case for a long time and it's not only Mint either. Sometimes I can't run a new version in Virtualbox...so I know something is wrong.

If you must have the latest version wait a few months and try again. Mint 22.1 is supported till 2029...so there's no need to get 22.2. I never upgrade...I always do a clean Install and never have problems.

I never upgrade; I would wipe out and overwrite. To think that 22.2 works with no problem for the laptop but the desktop, there must be something to look for as to why.

With the type of behavior that you are explaining I'm incline to say it's in the power management settings.

Make sure that suspend and sleep are set to 'never'. Also, don't allow in the power management settings for the screen to blank when the machine is idle. For me I use a screensaver and when I return to the desktop and move the mouse I'm back to where I was before the machine became idle.

I'm sure our member @Condobloke knows exactly what I'm talking about-:)

Do the laptop and the desktop have different video cards, and consequently different drivers?

What are the respective GPUs and what are the drivers?

Perhaps run: lspci -nnk | grep -i vga -A3 on both machines to see the relevant information.

There may be driver options that could be applied. If the GPU in the desktop happens to be a discrete unit, it's connection needs to be known to be good.

Thanks for jumping in @osprey.
I had forgotten that this type of perfomance issue could be driver related.

It's been my experience that if the wrong driver is loading first it will cause the device to fail.

When we install a new version of Mint...one of the first things we do is to run the Driver Manager...the OP has done this.

OP stated that 22.1 works just fine on the same computer...I have also had problems with new versions of Mint in the past that were fixed by waiting till the Mint team fixed the bugs.

A good way to test new versions of any Distro is to install it in Virtualbox or on a spare internal Drive without risking your main Drive.
