I've been trying to install Mint cinnamon for a couple days now. Dual boot with windows (yes I need it to be dual boot).

I got the install USB working. But only twice. Otherwise it only boots to a black screen. When I tried "nomodeset" (after deleting the boot MBR) I managed to get the install disk to work a second time. Now it also boots only to a black screen. I've installed twice as a dual boot. The first time I was able to restart and run driver updates. When I restarted the black screens started.

The second time I installed from the (also second) time I got the install disk working, I just deleted the old version and overwrote it with the new. I can't test anything on that because the install disk will no longer boot.

I'm starting a new thread because the first advice on all of these is to boot from the install disk (blank screen) or in recovery mode (see below)

I'm running two nVidia rtx ADA 6000 cards. I have two AMD EPIC cpu's, and a TB of RAM.

I think this may be why booting into recovery mode will not work. I just get line after line after line that a sata connection has timed out. I let that run for 8 hours while I slept before I woke up and just hit the reset button. That continual error chain seems to have something to do with booting with the "noapic" modifier. It pops up when I try to boot with that too.

Is there a way I can get into the files from the windows side and delete the drivers? Are they not getting deleted on the install?
Once I do manage to [fix issue] how can I get the right drivers? I went with the nVidia 580 drivers that were recommended by mint.
-OR-
Is there a better distro for my architecture? Ideally I want something that does GNOME. I'm a technical artist and went with mint because the largest number of programs I used were supported. Autodesk Maya is only supported for redhat, but it was specifically not recommended for beginners. Mint has support for Substance Painter and a ton of other stuff.

Help a poor noob out??

Mint is based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian. You can try out Ubuntu or Debian. Debian should give you the option to install which DE (desktop environment) you want during the installation process. Ubuntu uses Gnome by default. This is if you want to try another distro.

I have already tried installing Unbuntu to the same result. Loading screen and then blank. Didn't try turning off "quiet splash" but I can't imagine it would tell me anything new.

Sorry about that, I was just coming back here to say that when you replied. I haven't tried any other distros though. The unbuntu install disk did the same thing the mint install disk did

How old is your computer?

Another distro you can try if you have a fairly new machine:

Fedora also has good support for newer hardware.

Fedora Gnome. I remember buying a weird laptop from Microcenter with some unusual hardware/drivers. Only worked with Fedora.

Hopefully it works. FYI, Linux works best with machines that are a few years old. Its the opposite of Windows. Fedora uses more up to date kernels than Debian so hopefully that kernel has everything your machine needs to run.
