In a video on YouTube it was claimed that Linux has been bought by Microsoft for 3 billion.
Are there no Competition laws in the US?
Is this credible? Is it BS?
Please say it is not true.

i agree with f33dm3bits. microsoft will NEVER have the rights to the linux kernel project as it is open source. its not for sale and if microsoft wanted to use it they could just cause its open source. they dont need to buy it. + they wont even use it cause if they did their users could just remove their slop. Also Linus Torvalds will just say no.

Linus can't stop them. Microsoft is on the Linx Foundation - a platinum member. They use Linux all the time, on their Azure stack and elsewhere. They even have their own MSFT distro. Microsoft regularly adds to the kernel, paying people to work on it full time.

But microsoft dont want people use it as their main OS. + Azure linux is only accessible through their cloud service. So yes they can use it but only just for their cloud stuff. the OS they want people to use is windows. The only reason why they are a platinum member on the linux foundation is because they need linux for their backend servers as they ALSO know that windows is slow and unreliable but they refuse to accept that. So we are both right? Yes. Are you right? Yes. Am i right? Also yes.

that would require M$ to buy rights from over 1 million developers and contributors. Don't think that happened. Another fake news. Don't believe everything the media says.

I doubt that is true...but m$ have bought their way into Linux.

Canonical...the makers of Ubtunu are partnered with m$...m$ joined the Linux Foundation and so on...if you can't beat em...buy em.

I have changed the Title of this thread to reflect the facts, rather than the fiction.

My goodness, YouTube is one of the worst places to get accurate information. They also run endless, AI slop, videos about how outraged / upset / scared Etc Bill Gates is about some change by Microsoft. All, silly, nonsense, of course. Gates does have an advisory role with MS but what ever happens with the company has nothing to do with Gates.

the Linux kernel is an opensource project and can't be bought.
A sufficiently rich company can buy Linux if they pay all contributors to sell of their copyright.
MS could do this, but I don't think they will, investing in AI should be more profitable RN.

if they pay all contributors to sell of their copyright.

Someone would fork it, as the existing code would still be covered by the GPL.

That and there are a lot of rights holders. I don't say '100%' often, but I'm 100% certain that at least some percentage of the rights holders will not sell out -- even if they're offered extreme amounts of money.
