A recent post would have us believe that saving your old laptop-computers from the massive eWaste Mountain killing Planet Earth; by breathing new life into them with Linux was a bad idea..? The post drew an analogy with washing machines in that modern washing machines were more energy efficient than old washing machines.

Wo; hold on there – really. When I was a baby in nappies 1950 at the start of the baby boon in post war WW2 Britain: Wash day was Monday no matter if you were a family of three or eight. Women judged themselves against the entire street for top washing..! As people started out on tech abandoning the outside tub and dolly for your ultra modern Twin Tub – one wash the other rinse with mangle; where you first dropped in, top loader, the whites and lightly soiled items then after a good hot wash you transferred them to the top loading rinse. You then added ever dirtier items into the wash till all was done using the same hot water and detergent. Energy efficient

Later using the power of advertising to con the public these old twin tubs were seen as obsolete 1950’s scrap to be replaced with what our poster deems as more modern efficient front loaders – I will leave you guys to work out the maths.

However some mad British people like myself don’t run with the sheep and question everything we are told… Long live the Twin Tub….

https://polartwintubs.co.uk/

Quote: Since Hotpoint and Hoover stopped supplying twin tub washing machines Polar have supplied the market - Needing a wash within 5 minutes? With a twin tub you can have you washing ready to be hung on your line within 10 minutes - Low on electricity and water consumption a twin tub is the eco friendly way of washing. You are in control of your washing and how you want to do it.

Oh well – guess full circle back to the past….

Did I forget laptops-computers – not eco-friendly to inject Lovely Linux – they are not energy efficient – Modern is more efficient our poster said…. What…!

Can’t imagine Clive Sinclair would design anything inefficient – can you? The Spectrum was released as six different models, ranging from the entry level with 16 KB RAM released in 1982 to the ZX Spectrum +3 with 128 KB RAM and built in floppy disk drive in 1987; altogether they sold over 5 million units worldwide (not counting unofficial clones). The PSU power supply with 5V and 12V output, 2 Amp or 10W to 24W if you prefer – Ye Olde British Efficiency.
ZXSpectrum48k.jpg

Let us take a look at my old 2008 HP Laptop which does not even need all of it’s 65W output with my gnu-linux miniMAX setup – then fast forward to a modern Dell XPS Laptop which needs double the power supply output - 130 Watt E5 Type-C AC Adapter and the Acer Predator Helios 300 comes with a 180W charger.

For an actual reading in use plug in a Wattmeter available everywhere - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wattmeter

Some refurbished laptop-computer outlets in UK are quoting carbon emission savings for each refurb product - cool

Well that’s my two penny’s worth - please feel free to disagree – Ziggi

ps: It is great to reflect once in a while; what a gift gnu-linux is. To allow this old fool to experiment and perhaps learn a little along the way...

Long live the Twin Tub….
You don't say how old you are, but if you're old enough you may remember the crem del la crem of twin-tubs in the UK, the rolls razor, when we got married in 1974 we were given a second hand [1965] rolls razor twin-tub, it was brilliant, I kept it running for a further 14 years before it finally became impossible to find spares. I have a 2000 acer 32 bit travel mate laptop, the battery is shot, but it still works fine as an emergency spare, I am old school, if it ain't broke don't fix it, if you can't get spare parts don't buy it, The total end of life environmental cost of an electric car is worse than that of a modern [euro5] diesel car [unless you are producing your own electricity [PVC/wind or water turbine] so why waste money on the extra cost of purchasing one,
Yes, I am your typical British, Miserable old git.

Re-use is commendable, Recycle is questionable, A la mode is a sin.

Yeah and on electric cars you still have to mine the lithium for the batteries????:eek::eek: Anyway have an old 32bit Sony Laptop given to me which I run sometimes running Debian - nice.

Said user happily linked to empirical proof of their assertions. Denying reality is not a strong suit.

I'd dig out a bunch more, but I am on mobile. The problems are many, such as trying to do the mental math with the peak power consumption on modern CPUs when they actually spend their time throttled down with very little power consumption. You can actually do that math yourself, or not.

Nice one Darry ;) Don’t forget Cobalt, Gold, Copper and mining Rare Earth Elements..!

Hey Bartaward yourself five bonus points – hand powered mangle – how energy efficient is that..? What next..? Communal Cooking..? Cat’s Whisker Radio..? Cycling to work and shops? o_O

As people get poorer and poorer to pay for the Proxy war in Europe perhaps many will revisit old fashioned energy efficient methods? OMG  – they might even start to question what the TV is telling them..?

What cost? – the lives of innocent children who may never get to own a laptop-computer?

Denying reality is not a strong suit.
I suspect that it’s not only me that had a good laugh at Big Bucks Bunny KGIII…?

Guess he is still in climate change denial as the - Bomb cyclone explodes: 215 million under weather alerts as temps drop 40 degrees in one hour…!

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/bomb-cyclone-places-millions-weather-alert-40-degree-drop

As Big Bucks Bunny KGIII disappears down his rabbit hole to play with his mega RAM computer with hundreds of browser tabs open. Unfortunately none of them link eWaste to climate – yes folks – stranger than fiction – Hahaha  Neither do they show the facts about saving older laptops and why keeping the one you have are so good for the planet. ;)

Of course these hundreds of web pages show just how out of touch Big Bucks Bunny KGIII and mega RAM new laptop buyers are, and have been for years.

I am quite sure all of you can do your own research where you may find…

The production of more than 272 million new computers annually suggests that the manufacturing IT sector contributes just as much greenhouse gas pollution to the atmosphere as the entire aircraft industry.

On average, a new laptop produces 331 kgs of carbon dioxide (CO2) during manufacture.

This means that just three brand-new laptops generate around a thousand kilograms of CO2, which is comparable to filling an entire three-bedroom house.

The production and materials needed to make the motherboard, SSD and display account for the majority of a laptop’s emissions, which range from 75% to 85% of its entire carbon footprint.

At 72 years of age – playing the end game – I hope one or two of you will be making New Year resolutions that may help our beautiful planet because at some point you have to take personal responsibility and not join the blame game on social media and forums.

You could not make this up....

US winter storm hits and Hell freezes over  as 17 people die in Christmas 'bomb cyclone'
The town of Hell, Michigan, is reported to have quite literally frozen over as over 1.5 million people in the country were forced to go without power on Friday.

Big Bucks Bunny aka KGIII…?

Perhaps he could confirm that he still stands by his assertion…

See post #11...

Would be nice to start New Year with a clean slate ;) I have no problems holding my hand up saying …..

Wed 28 Dec 2022 14.16 GMT - 2022 will be the UK’s warmest year on record, as the Met Office says figures show the climate crisis is having a real impact.

Forecasters highlighted that the 10 warmest years on record have all occurred since 2003. Temperature trends show that the UK is hotter since humankind started releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels, and all four seasons in 2022 fall in the top 10 of a ranking which began in 1884.

Yet there are those who are still in denial – and there are those who refuse to change there ways. Worse still are those Fossil Fuel fossils who advise others to carry on as usual.

I am still doing my bit with Linux…

Hope I can inspire others to take personal responsibility..?

Science is fine.

Reminder, politics is strictly off limits. Sadly, science has been politicized, so let's exercise some caution.

Just look out of your window or go for a walk - climate change is all around us every month something major kicks off - no politics needed.
Are you still in denial..?

For the record, I've never denied climate science. I'm the guy with solar and wind, working on moving more things to electric.

However, the person I'm responding to has not learned their lesson and is on yet another vacation for attempting to goad, argue, bait, cause drama, etc...

So, we'll wait for 'em to return.
